Low budget but have a capable boat, motor, longlines and could paint my big bluebills to look sorta like, but wondered if anyone would guide for Eider or whatever off northeast coast in December or as late as it's open? Don't want to die trying but could be worse ways to go. Assume it's too tricky out there without really good knowledge/help, would appreciate advice or whatever. Duck slow here now, geese moving in and deer really active too in Fingerlakes.

I would make it a New York sea duck hunt .I have done alot of hunting in central Maine for ducks, deer, grouse and bear and done well. This was my first season for sea ducks on my own , and i pleasantly surprised with the bird activity even as a new sea duck hunter. The one thing I will recommend as a boater from the south shore of Long Island is do your homework the bays inlets and ocean are a far cry from the Fingerlake area . You will not be disappointed if you try sea ducking N.Y., Just be safe , Iwas out in Fire Island inlet this summer bass fishing and saw the water in the inlet stand up to 8ft . The idea of a guide to get your feet wet wouldnt hurt . I know about buget ! , so i would start out in the shelter of one of the bay areas in your own rig , just my 2 cents

It's do-able. Season is open till end of Jan.

What do you consider a capable boat? The north Atlantic isn't the greatest place to test your 'luck'!

I would recommend calling a guide, or at least someone who is familiar with the area you plan on going to.

Good luck and be sfe!

alan, ive done several maine eider trips. mostly with a guide but we brought our own boat last year and had a retired guide in the boat who knows the water like his back yard. we normally hunt in the first half of december, plenty of prime birds but the weather is not crazy cold like january. the maine coast is tricky so i wouldnt do it on your own for the first trip. but id recommend every diver hunter hunt maine eiders! theres nothing like it. best, mark

PM me if you would like more info on the area we hunt...

Have a 21' SWAT with a 80 Yamaha, I think it will stand up alright within reason on the coast. However I would not even try without someone along to guide going out in Dec/Jan. Just am assuming considerably less expensive vs. full equiped hunt?
We bought a full hunt at a DU dinner by some LI guide named Red something and he's held us off two years running for lack of ducks on LI. So figured we'd try somewhere else, any suggested/recommended guides or experienced hunters that might be flexible enough to entertain self hunt?
Got a decent 8 opening day, 18th deer that went by in range before lunch, somehow missed it clean standing broadside and it ran in 25 yards and stood there again for some reason.
