making a list

Hello All,

Blake and I are sitting down trying to compile a list of all the things he will need for the trip to Houghton Lake in October for the MLB hunt.

He thought it would be helpful if we asked you guys what all you plan to take with you. Well that and the fact a $50.00 bill is burning a hole in his pocket and we are hitting the Cabelas over by Detroit this weekend...

Making a list to check off is something him and dad used to do to ensure they didnt forget anything
(except what they forgot to put on the list that is haha)

Anyway he is getting really pumped the closer it is getting, so any help would be great!

Bridget and Blake

First thing on the list:

Gun and Ammo

You wouldn't believe and please dont ask.
Second thing: Extra socks

Other than that I'm usually good.

Warm cloths, good boots or waders, several pairs of gloves. Blake I bet you thought we'd say Beef Jerky, cheezits, cookies...huh?

A warm knit hat, wool gloves, leather gloves and sunglasses are high on my list. Chemical handwarmers if it is going to be below 40F. Snacks and drinks are very important, keeps you warm and happy! A pair of binoculars is nice to have. A camera and journal is great as well, you'll never remember it as well without them.

Really though, a gun, shells and license is all you need. The rest can be fudged along the way. Especially when with friends!

Have a great hunt! The preparation is a big part of the fun.

I'm a fan of multiple pairs of gloves. Neoprene or rubber for pickin decoys. Leather choppers with wool inserts are great, especially if you have extra wool inserts when the first ones get wet.

And, since I can't be there, he should probably have a variety of duck, goose, and predator calls to practice on at all hours of the day and night!! haha

There are some fellow on here who think powdered donuts are all you really need...( : )

I'll add a game vest, one that'll fit over his coat, so too big is better than too small. If I'm hunting in a field, I usually carry my junk in a pack, in my case an old army ALICE pack, which may be too big for him. In a boat it's in a bucket, brown or green, with the "bucket seat" for a lid. Sometimes the pack goes with the boat, and the bucket to the field too. In fact, army surplus stores are a good place to spend some of that 50 bucks.
A good duck identifier booklet is great for a kid to take, and let him identify the species of birds shot.
Make sure he has camoflage for his face. I use the head net type. I popped the lenses out of an old pair of sunglasses, and sewed the net to them. This way when I turn my head, the eye holes in the net stay lined up with my eyes.
Oh yeah, a stanley thermos, full of hot coco.

At risk of repeating a few things from above, this is roughly my list:

-- License(s)
-- State & Federal Stamps
-- Gun with plug installed
-- Floating gun case
-- Non-toxic ammo
-- Game strap to carry birds
-- Pocket knife
-- Game shears
-- Folding saw for cutting brush
-- Call(s)
-- Whistle
-- Freezer Ziplock bags
-- Compass with neck laynard
-- Thermos for hot chocolate, tea or coffee
-- Thermos for stew or soup
-- Insect spray (we often have lots of insects here during the season)
-- Gloves (usually two pairs)
-- Face mask
-- Hat
-- Waterproof jacket
-- Boots (wader belt if wearing waders)
-- Life preserver
-- Binoculars
-- Waterfowl ID book
-- Small flashlight
-- First aid kit
-- Bag to carry the stuff -- My stuff is compact enough now that I use one small bag to carry shooting stuff and one wader bag to carry boots, life preserver, etc.

Hope this helps. If you are missing something, please post back. I have a box of extra stuff, most of which is cold weather gear that I never use. I would be happy to send missing items if I have or can obtain them.

Looks like we have a pretty good start, beef jerky cheezits and hot cocoa were second on his list under his trusty 28 ga.
Wouldnt you know it he also wondered if he should be in charge of the biscuits and gravy!!

I had not thought of zip lock bags,

we tried on his boots last night he has gone from a size 5 kids last year to about a 7 mens this year..
plus room for the two pairs of socks...

He has his boat pack we grabbed from dads shop that they took out last year, were going to go threw that today and see whats what.

He brought home a video a few weeks ago from dads I thought had said the art of decoy "making" no it said the art of decoy calling needless to say Ive heard nothing but that damn video coming from his room since.. haha

Thanks again for the info I appreciate it very much!

Bridget

oh and I had planned on stuffing a picture of dad into his bag, Im sure he may need to look at it a few times.. : )
