Making foam decoys

Carved foam or cast foam?

Carved is pretty straight forward. Most guys use woodend heads and everyone that I have seen uses the burlap and tile mastic system to protec the foamm

Casting you can use either two part expanding foam or "beer cooler" beads and expand them with heat. Both use metal forms.

That's pretty cool, and as far as basics, doesn't look that hard to do. The detail work would be learned over trial an error I would think. Learning more and more as you go on. Shortcuts too! Thanks guys !!

You can do alot with foam and there is plenty of info and help out there if you want to learn how. Check out Woodduck31's (Don Mintz) foamer DVDs if you want a really good "how to" on foamers.

Its amazing what that man can do and his DVDs' are more than worth the money for those still learning the carving and painting process or want to improve on one or the other. I know foam is probably looked upon with disdain by some but for those of us who cannot purchase wood/cork due to financial or availability concerns, a sheet of 2" foam is the next best thing going.

Those Woodies and Can look GREAT ! Believe I'm going to try my hand at making a few here soon. How good does foam ride on the water? Movement look life-like?

I started my first last weekend and hope to make a bunch this weekend. I have seen video of Don's foamers with river keels and their movement is amazing!!
