I always seem to have a lot of cutoffs and slabwood that I hate to throw away or burn. The following is what I do to try and turn my leftovers into useful head stock. Also in doing this I've increased the strength of my bills. You really need access to a planer or jointer for this.
My pile of leftovers............
I planed a small board out of the scrap heap that is approx 2 x 4 x 12.
Next I cut the board in half and glue the two pieces together so that I have a mirrow image of the end grain.
After the glue is dry I run the block through the jointer to make sure that it is totally square and then layout my head pattern on the block and then cut out the head. You will notice that you have an automatic center line on the top of the block and also the top of your cutout. .
If your scrap is wide enough you can even do this method and come up with some body blocks....especially for Teal or Buffies. The big thing you will notice is how strong your bills are with the glue joint and opposing grain.
