I got a few minutes in today to try to photgraph some mallards. The ducks seemed very nervous and after a few minutes look who dropped by -

The were 3 of these guys and about 150 mallards. I did not see a mallard hit but it looked like it could happen.

Great shot, Sarge!

I watched a "marsh hawk" take a black duck on the wing this year at MNWR. The percussion from impact was incredible!

Do you see many raptors on the north shore?

Hey Robert ! - We have a fair number of these red tails and a couple groups of turkey buzzards. Up on the Merrimack there are also some eagles. I saw a big doe out on the edge of a flooded marsh today. I think she swam over from plum island and couldn't move around too well. When I went over in the BBSB she laid down and even flattened her head and ears to try to hide. With the small boat I couldn't do much but I imagine she just walked to our side's hard ground as the tide dropped this afternoon - never seen a deer out there.

That photographer's eye is developing! Great shot, Sarge. I'm glad that you are having so much fun. Keep those pics coming.

Nice picture! I had a bald eagle foul up a gadwall shoot last week. They were headed our way, then suddenly turned and went directly away from us. A mature eagle had been watching them from the bluff behind us and headed their way.

That's wild Sarge. I saw 2 deer swimming in the river last week. They were just floating down with the tide. Then they swam to the edge of the river, ran up on the marsh and into to the woods. This was when muzzle loader season was still open. I think hunting activity in the woods nearby had the deer on the move. Certainly was a first for me too though to see them in the river like that.

Thanks Michael - I have some better glass coming and am looking forward to trying to get some pics of eagles later in the winter.

Hey Mike - Thanks for posting about the deer you saw swimming - now I am sure that doe made it out fine. There was no way she was joining me in the BBSB !

Great shot. I saw something similar the other day. I cant ID the birds but there was a pair of them flying out over the water. The male which was much larger continuously would climb and make mock diving runs at the smaller female (I assume). I'm guessing courtship. They definitely were not Marsh hawks. I was thinking Perigrines perhaps. I'm no raptor expert. Still very cool to see.

At our cabin on Rainy Lake in Canada there is a narrows that everyone calls "Deer Crossing" because the deer are always swimming across there. I've seen them crosss some pretty big sections of water. Its kind of funny when someone says watch out for that dead head and you get up close and find out its a deer or black bear.
