Get the duck dog. Dogs are pack animals. My plan was a new pup every 7 or 8 years. That schedule worked pretty good. There have been a few glitches, one died of cancer, but the pup had one season under his belt with the older dog before he was my only dog. I also have picked up an occasional free pup that was not in the planned time schedule. That really gave me a different perspective when two labs are close in age. They bonded more than any of my other dogs. With two dogs so close in age I decided to put off getting a new pup and giving the old dogs every opportunity to hunt. That backfired when both old dogs broke in the same fall. The new pup is about 9.5 years younger than one dog and about 11 years younger than the other. The young dog bonded with me much more than the old dogs, but they still all get along well. Having three dogs doesn't make me feel as guilty when I only take one dog hunting. The one thing I don't like about having three dogs, is that I only have 2 hands.
