Man's Best Friend

Get the duck dog. Dogs are pack animals. My plan was a new pup every 7 or 8 years. That schedule worked pretty good. There have been a few glitches, one died of cancer, but the pup had one season under his belt with the older dog before he was my only dog. I also have picked up an occasional free pup that was not in the planned time schedule. That really gave me a different perspective when two labs are close in age. They bonded more than any of my other dogs. With two dogs so close in age I decided to put off getting a new pup and giving the old dogs every opportunity to hunt. That backfired when both old dogs broke in the same fall. The new pup is about 9.5 years younger than one dog and about 11 years younger than the other. The young dog bonded with me much more than the old dogs, but they still all get along well. Having three dogs doesn't make me feel as guilty when I only take one dog hunting. The one thing I don't like about having three dogs, is that I only have 2 hands.

Thank for your reply, I am going to get another dog. I really like that you took in a third dog. In my younger dog breeding days. I use to have both the male and female. They both hunted ! and it was a great time in my life. So I understand where your coming from. I also like your little saying. Why get a low profile boat and put a high profile blind on it? That my friend is so true. I never understood that. Thanks

A good thread to start, Anthony. Like others, I'm in a situation with my chocolate lab who is 9 years old. She's a great companion and in good health. As we all know things can change quickly with our dogs. After lots of noodling I've decided to hunt her solo this season and bring a pup into the picture next spring when she'll be ten. After talking with a few members here I'm getting a Chessie pup. Part of the reasoning to switch breeds was not wanting to compare the next dog with Cree. Easy to do with another lab and not fair to the pup. And that darned Phil and Kodi had a lot to do with it too.
Get yourself a pup and have some fun.

Don't blame me.... Kodi is just wonderful beast! How could you not fall for him?
