Okay I would like to get some advise from the masses. I am looking to build a marsh boat that is light weight can be paddled and can be used as a layout boat. I saw a boat that was made from foam and then fiberglass, anyways any ideas would be great. I am hoping to get going on it right away so i can use it this fall.
Thanks
Riley

The hybred would fit what you are decribing. Its definetly not a good looking boat like those built by the people here but it floats and those that have built one and used it seem to like it. You can read about them at the Refuge under the Boats, blinds and gadgets thread. Its a sticky there.

I guess it depends on what you mean by lightweight...I built one that is 12 ft long...a beauty by no means by very effective...but it weighs AT LEAST 100 lbs.

The foamers don't end up being light due to all the wood support they require to hold up. If someone were to take the time and make a foam hull similar to how they make yachts or surboards there might be some weight savings. However the amount of epoxy it takes makes them really exspensive boats and not too light.

The hybrid has gone through some serious modifications over the last year and the NL version is a much better boat than the original and will serve the true layout hunter better.

okay here is the question where can i get plans for the hybrid? With the type of hunting I do I think that it will be the best boat for me.

The link to the hybrid is in the second post. $25 bucks for the plans for the new NL version and that include a construction video on DVD. The plans for the old version are free on several sites including the Duck Boat Specs page here.

See the second boat down the list.

However, you really need to look at the new NL version and check out the thread on the Refuge

The NL stuff starts showing up around page 78. The thread is now over 100 pages long and contains a huge amount of info on constructing the various types of hybrids. There have been a lot of guys that have looked at the old hybrid and then made their own version to suit their needs.

I went with a sculling float. Most are low enough to layout in and you can sneak up on them if they don't come to you. My biggest problem with the Hybrid is cosmetics. If you are going to spend the time and money to make something, it might as well look good.
