MB deer hunt.

Despite the 3 planes, 22 hour travel day getting there it was a great trip. Got to hunt with old friends, visit family, revisit old spots. My expectations for a decent buck were low due to two bad winters in a row that have taken their toll on the populations. I was happy to see almost all does had fawns with them, and many had twins so that bodes well for next year. Due to the high water this summer there was quite a bit of unharvested land that was too wet to get to, and lots of hay that didn't get a second cut, so food was not a problem for the deer. It was -10C ish and windy the whole two weeks, but without enough snow for tracking, which was challenging.

By the end of the first week I had scoped out a 4x4 I was interested in and got hidden in some grass with a bipod awaiting his arrival one evening. He gave me a standing broadside shot at 190 yds and I put one in his neck. I really wanted him to die in an easy to retrieve spot, and behind him was a big nasty 600+ acre prairie and scrub mess. You can see he died chewing.

My sister's youngest is keen on hunting these days so she tagged along with me one morning to help out with a drive. The buck came straight for us so that was that.

The last deer is the best one me and the guys got this year. That was a windy cold morning.

Good times.

Nice deer Mike. We were froze off the river for our first season. The river opened up this past week and hoping to get out this coming weekend for the second season. The freezer is empty. It'll be a long year without any of my wife's venison chilli!!

love it, love it, love it.

I've been working some sheep horn - smells kinda like fried chicken wings (sans sauce) when burnt.

I'm not much of a writer, but I will update my yukonmike.com website with my best of 2014 pictures pretty soon. I definitely had some good days afield this year!

Jane was bugging me about not having anything prepared for supper last night, and I pointed out that there is about 300 lbs of black bear meat, 30 lbs of Mac's sheep, 30 lbs of imported deer backstraps, a BUNCH of ducks, several bags of grouse boobs, a diverse variety of fish, numerous bags of bison burger, smokies, Brats, garlic sausage, elk ribs, soup bones, AND A FLYING SQUIRREL in the freezer for her, courtesy of me and the dogs. "I gotta cook it too?" : )

There must be a place where sewing up holes in coyote hides in the garage all afternoon counts as domestic chores and gets you off the hook for stuff in the house, but its not this place I'll tell ya.

Hey Todd, when you are grinding on your sheep horn just lick it a bit and see if it really does taste like chicken wings!

Mike,

Nice looking bucks you got there.
Must be a good feeling going into winter with your freezers packed.

Full freezer = happiness. This is an actual photo of the meat department at our main grocery store a while back.

And sometimes there's no bread for a while too.

Every now and then a produce truck will freeze up en route. You ever eaten canned peas? Uuuugh (shudder) No one should ever have to eat canned peas unless they loose a bet.

When I was down South I went shopping with my sister in Calgary and it seemed strange to me that there weren't any empty spots on the shelves anywhere!

Mike

Thats what I call slim pickins. Our shelves only look like that when there is a hurricane coming.
