Over the past few years now here in NJ we are now fortunate to provide a February coastal youth day. As in years past I usually guide a open water Layout hunt for the boys this year the weather wasn't cooperating so I had to resort to plan B. Scouting the spot for a week consistent activity it looked perfect. I called together a group of passionate young men around the ages of 12 to 15 and their parents (some of our very own from the site) to accompany the hunt.
Scheduled everyone to meet at the ramp Saturday morning at 6am. Set the hunt safety ground rules for the boys, Got the boats in the water and off we went, into the bitter wind, waves and frigid temps.
Got the rig set up and the boys loaded up it was shooting time.
First few customers of the day were some oldsquaw and buffies.
Then the wind really started howling and the broadbill piled in heavy ranging from groups of 3 to 20. Feet down 15 yards from shore the boys blasted away but 30 mph winds made it tough shooting (I think they had more fun hearing the gun go off) they scratched a few and we beat feet by noon and off to the diner for a well deserved hot lunch. (also another good time for the boys) All and all it was a great morning spent, the boys had a blast and that's all she wrote for the 2015-2016 season! I'm ready to do it all over again.
