1997 15 hp mercury long shaft just serviced guy is asking 950 what is a reasonable price on this motor not trying to low ball but don't want to over pay any advice be great. It runs fine from what he says I plan to go look at it this evening.

Long Shaft.... what are you putting it on? 15HP? I might have missed what you are working on... I thought it was a 12ft row boat?

Same thought came to mind, if its for the aluminum boat you showed pics of the other day, long shaft wont work.
Also, it does seem high for a 15 year old 15hp, but motor prices vary by region. Long shafts are a premium for sailboat kickers down here and don't go cheap.

A lot of factors there....was it used in salt water a lot?

What type of service? Water pump, thermostat, plugs, compression test ,etc

$800-900 if it's a fresh water motor and super clean

That seems a lot to me too. I have a 1997 9.9, it is the same motor with a different carb, and it has been an excellent motor for me since I bought it new. Salt or fresh, I am not so sure it makes much of a difference, although I am sure others do. Mine has only ever been in salt, and there is no corrosion anywhere. If it runs good it runs good. Most of the corrosion type issues you should be able to see without taking the motor apart. A friend of mine bought what you are looking at (except with a short shaft, as is mine) this past fall for around $500, and that motor probably doesn't have 50 hours on it. But like somebody already said, it is almost a 20 year old motor, and they only cost around $1500 new at the time. It is also pretty easy to do most of the maintenance yourself, and parts are widely available. So if it runs and starts right up, and you could buy it for $5-600, I think you would be good. At $900 I don't think I would be interested. I am assuming a long shaft works for you. If the length is not ideal, I would offer less.

Chris, Short answer= keep looking. That is way too much IMHO for that motor. Of course anyone who knows me I'm pretty much anti black motors. Just my point of view. The long shaft is a big deal too, won't work worth a darn on your boat.

Thanks for the advice guys I'll continue the search save number two from the duckboats.net crew

If its a mercury, especially a 20 year old mercury it has no value other than a boat anchor.
Best service I've had has come from Nissan outboards
