Gentlemen and Lady,
Would appreciate some pro's and con's on an outboard I found for sale...
It's a 2003 Mercury 40Hp ELPTO 2 stroke...Claims it weighs just 165# which would really suit my needs for more Hp without the extra weight..
I need it as a tiller model which according to Mercury CS there's a tiller handle available for this model..
I haven't much experience with Mercury and before I pull the trigger to purchase and convert I thought I'd ask for some input...
Any info is greatly appreciate..

Bruce

Paul,
Thanks.. I saw that when I checked the other day...Seller claims this engine was designed as a lighter weight model to better suit using it on the smaller Boston Whalers...I haven't found the #'s listed at 165 anywhere yet...
Bruce

I believe I read that older model years at 40 hp are shown as 2 cylinders while 2003 is listed as 3 cylinders. Are you certain of the model year or number of cylinders?

He says its a 2003 2 cylinder...I haven't taken the time to go see for myself yet...I called the Mercury company and checked for tiller conversion availability but didn't question the weight...

The 2 mercs I've owned an 88 4 stroke, and a 2001 2 stroke have been great. Best of luck, Kevin

Would buy another 1 ...........

I had a 2003 tracker pontoon I bought new with that motor. Great motor with no issues in the 6 years I owned it. I sold it to a neighbor he ran it for 3 years before trading. All that was ever done that I was aware of was replace water pumps and spark plugs. NADA calls weight out as 173 lbs. I suppose that could be shipping weight being listed.

Bruce the motor weight is 173 lbs without the tiller handle. part # for the tiller handle kit is 821455A 8 I bought them off ebay new for that motor before around $300.00. the two cyd. 40's are a simple motor 1 carb with two cyd. they don't run as smooth as a three cyd 40 but their a good motor good luck clark

I had an early 80's 25hp two-stroke that was great, never a problem. Old age became a problem (for me, not the motor!) though, and I replaced it with a 15hp electric start 4 stroke. Probably weighs more than the 25, but they've both been great motors. I'd buy Mercury again in a heartbeat.

I've run a 25 2 stroke Merc manual start the last three years. Once I figured out how to prime it, it has been a fantastic motor. No trouble with cold starting at all. Run great, sips gas.

Thanks for the responses to my question...UPDATE: I have decided to purchase the 40hp mercury 2 stroke and convert to a tiller...I'll post up some pics after I get all done...Thanks again...

Good deal Bruce. Glad it worked out to get the engine, hopefully she will run without problems and provide many years of service. I have been completely satisfied with my 96 40hp Merc 2-stroke. I would buy it again without reservation.

I've had a 2002 25hp two-stroke for a long time. It has always worked perfectly. Never done anything other than routine maintenance to it.
