Merritt Island Info

I'm considering a trip to Merritt Island for a hunt, I live 2.5 hours south. Is the water deep enough for a 9.8 to run in. Most everyone I know uses a go devil. I hunt the south end of Okeechobee and the waters up so gators are bad. Needless to say I won't use the dog. Are the gators that bad in Merritt Island or can I get in the 12" shallows easier enough. If u can point me in the right direction that would be great....John

John,
Hitch would be the man to ask. I'm not sure if you can duck hunt the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge or not but something to check into. They had small write up in nov/dec copy of DU. I used to hunt the Banana River's 1000 Island area. But that was 30 years ago... Good luck Ed

Ed, Thanks for the info, I decided to skip the trip, I spoke to a few guys who hunted it and they were disappointed. I used to live in Mechanic Falls, Me. and worked in Auburn. Hunted out of Wiscassett, Baileys Island. That was 22 years ago, Shot plenty of Eider and black duck. John

We've hunted it several times this year and it's been real slow. We're trying to take a Pintail and a few wigeon while the traveling decoy is here...too much skybusting elsewhere to try it, but it's been really slow.
