Mexican Drakes

Here is a shot of two Mexican drakes. One would be classified as a Mexican/mallard hybrid. You can see the tail feathers just beginning to curl plus all of the black in the tail section. The second one looks pretty good. The reverse migration is in full swing now. There are lots of snows and Ross' coming back from Chihuahua, Mexico, just like these Mexican ducks. This spring the Rio Grande will have allot of Mexican duck pairs on it since this area is about as far north as they go for their breeding grounds.
Yesterday while cutting firewood, I noticed several flocks of light geese flying quite low over the Rio. That told me that they had just come back from Mexico and hadn't been initiated by hunters yet in this area. Normally they are at least a quarter mile up when flying the Rio Grande. Next time the winds are out of the north, I'll bring my shotgun along.

Al, that bottom bird looks an awful lot like a Black/Mallard Hybrid I killed this year. When I pulled the trigger I swore it was a Black Duck. I realized right away it was a hybrid when Kane brought it back to me.

what a shame that the Mallards have all but bred the Mexicans out of existance......

How often do you see them where at least when you see them there isn't an "obvious" cross?

Steve

Well I always figured that the mallard was the "dump" or "coyote" bird of the waterfowl world....highly adaptable, eat anything, live anywhere,,,and so on and so forth....

Nice shot to compare the two Al

The general consensus is that is what is happening to the Back Ducks in the East. Seems the Black Duck hens have an affinity for those handsome drake Mallards and will choose them over Black Duck drakes given the opportunity. We still shoot several Blacks every year that appear to be pure strain...

that a hen of any of the "other" Mallards woud pick a "pimped out ride" over a bird that looks no different than she does except for the bill color.......

And if further proof is needed that things aren't gong to change in the future and see the "tramps" changing their ways and returning to "breeding true" one has to look no further than the offspring of this "Mallard X hybrid"....

I mean SERIOUSLY when a Mallard drake can convince an alligator that he's a better mate, and then close the deal, then I'd suggest that we all start leaving the wives and girlfriends at home during the Mallard Rut......

Steve,

If I see something like that in northern Utah.....I would think the end is near....and 666...and all sorts of crazyness....

You must be as bored as I am today to spend time making Malgators........paper work today......taxes...bidding.....UGH!!!

Matt

something like that......

Had nothing to do with rather I received it from a "reliable" source in Florida who claimed that his dog was accosted, (that means sexually attack and not for eating purposes), by a GROWED UP version of the little one above...

He sent it not only to warn me about bringing my dog to Florida but also to show just how bad Mallard hybridization had become in Florida.....

Steve

Poor doggy!!!! Maybe you need to develop a market for gear designed to protect ones doggy from Malgator attacks.......and a method for reducing the libido of the mallard clan males.....

DeWayne, I am sure that the mottled duck must have the same problems that the black and the Mexican duck do when it comes to the mallard crossing with them. There are lots of hybrid ducks out there and we aren't even talking about domestic crosses!
Al

Steve, I think this year I only took about a half dozen Mexican ducks that looked like a good representatives of their breed. Most drakes might have a slightly curled black tail feather or green in the head.
Al

Yeps, same problem with Mottleds & mallards, especially in peninsular Florida.
I understand the problem is not as bad over in LA & TX, or here in ALabama. I know that here the mottled ducks keep to themselves in the saltmarshes, where not many park ducks hang out.

been too long since I shot a MEXICAN.......heck I'll bring the Mexican Decoys.......

You have to let me shoot those quail off your back fence though if tey get all lined up like they were in that picture.....

Steve

we can get a bunch of em lined up in a row....less noise to disturb the neighbors.....and that post is better cause if I was to shoot the ones on that cute little pickety fence thing you posted before I'd guess thre'd be some holes, and a pissed off wife, to deal with.......best not to piss off the hostess on the first visit.......
