mice

This winter I am considering storing my boat under the front deck of our house. This is rural so there are mice. Anybody have any suggestions on how to keep the mice from setting up shop? In the past I have tried moth balls, I have tried Vicks vapor rub, with mediocre success.
Anybody have any tried and true mouse repellent?

Moth balls

When we moved out here to MT the mice set up shop in my wife's Hyundai Tuscon. She tried everything to get rid of them , the only thing that work was moth balls.

Gary, I had the same issues/concerns awhile back.... did not want to use the decon for fear of having them die in the boat somewhere, tried the standard traps, as I did not to run the risk of huriting the local foxes, cats and birds of prey, but I also don't want to deal with mice and the problems they create. I did catch a bunch on traps, but in the heat of the summer it was a PITA having to run the trap line 2x a day... then I got some poison used by orchards. I imagine it is the commercial version of Decon, but spread it around the boats and in the shop areas and have not seen any evidence of mice since.

Our deer camp is located 7 miles in the bush on very rough trails so we only use it a few times a year during moose and deer season so the mice can be a problem.
If you use a poison the mice might end up rotting in the walls or where you can't find them and the smell can be very over powering.
We now use a 5 gallon pail with about 5-6 inches of anti freeze/prestone and about half way down the pail smear the inside with peanut butter and lastly put some sticks against the pail to make a kind of ramp for them to climb up.
When the mice go after the bait they fall in and drown and best of all there is no smell from the corpses.
I think our record was 37 and the camp is so much cleaner now since using this trick,,,,,,,,,Chuck

I own a company and we offer rodent control. One of the things people say is we don't want them to die in our house. If you have mice then they are already dropping dead in your house. Mice are fast breeders 2 can turn into dozens in months. They chew on wires and can do a lot of damage. If you are going to use bait blocks outside put them in RtU bait stations, get the big ones for outside and place them against the foundation wall. Mice like to follow the edges of structure. In the boat place the bait stations against the edge. If you are going to use snap traps place the trigger plate against the wall with the snap far from wall. Older mice can jump the snap after it is triggered by jumping back . This way they can't jump back because of the wall and they get hit. If you place the trap lengthwise on the wall they can jump it. Peanut butter with a little bird seed works well. Also for outside a 5 gal pail float some bird seed in it, run a board up it and the chip minks and mice will dive in. Happy hunting

I generate my share of flies in the summer with my mouse trapping, but never killed an old lady.
