Midwest Boat Builders Gathering

The fifth annual Midwest Duck Boat Builders Gathering will take place Saturday, August 14, 2010.

The official event time is noon-5pm at Shelter #2 on Goose Island.

Of course, there will be unofficial events going on before and after at the Goose Island campground.

Note: this is a different shelter than the one we have used the past two years. We'll have lots of shade, more room to display the boats, and it's a little easier to find. The downside is that we will not be on the water's edge.

Goose Island is located just south of La Crosse, WI.

If you want to reserve a camping site or get directions to the shelter, you can find information here: http://www.lacrossecountycamping.com/

All pies need to be submitted a week in advance by FedEX overnight. I'll send you some pics so that you can judge "visual presentation." I guess I'll have to judge the "taste component." Winners will be announced on the 14th.

I love the pie aspect to all this but I really do think you need to have a real pie contest at the event!

That is my bride and my anniversary so I think there is a good chance I can make it this year. Twelve years of nothing but bliss....

Actually she might go for it put me down as a maybe and I can bring a pie if needed.

Rick forgot to mention to be sure to ship those pies to Shell Rock IA

In addition to rhubarb, this year I will hopefully be bringing a gooseberry pie. Never heard of this type of berry before, but was ordering some plants from Gurney's and thought this one sounded interesting.

I also hope to be camping over the weekend and bringing Juggernaut.

Andrew,

There's nothing better than a Gooseberry pie. :^) It's even DUCK related Hehe.

Rick and Dave, You know where I'm at, let me know what you need. Hey, "IF" our peach tree actually bears fruit this year I'm in for a sour cream peach pie!!!

I remember hearing about this event when I signed up for DB. Although I am always up good for a pie, I am sure it has a focus somewhat beyond. For those of us newbies, care to introduce the concept again?

Steve,

For most of the guys, it has a focus well beyond pies. For Dave and Andrew, well . . .

It's an informal gathering of guys who hang out on this forum. A chance to bring boats, look at the different designs, see some of the modifications that guys have made, share hunting stories, display decoys, etc. If you've been thinking about building a boat, it's a good chance to compare some of the models, or even take one out on the river.

Most of the guys from out of town camp for the weekend at Goose Island and start showing up Friday afternoon/evening. Pretty good fishing on that part of the river.

There's no need to register or anything like that. Just show up.

There is no shame in being sheltered Phil, we are compassionate and will let guys bring any old mutt,,, err I mean breed. Heck Pete and Rick bring both bring curly haired dogs along every year. We just smile and don't usually say anything.

I'll most likely be arriving Friday late and heading home mid-day on Sunday.

Always a good time. Good folks and good stories. Any of you guys in the midwest that get a chance to go you won't be disappointed. I'm glad I had the opportunity to go when I lived up there.

Take care,

Ed L.
