Mike Huckabee duck hunting on Nightline

And I have to say, I was not much impressed. This was clearly a high-end private duck club with guides doing all the calling and blind holding a dozen people, not to mention the camera crew and reporter. I'd guess the blind was the size of my house.

Highlights:

--Camera shots of the decoy rig, which featured a pair of winged decoys on a wire that twirled around in circles like a merry-go-round. Reminded me of my one attempt as a kid to fly one of those prop-driven planes on a string--although this rig worked better.

--Much discussion of the need to keep still and keep your face covered, followed by multiple camera shots of the guides working flying ducks while the "hunters" wandered around the blind with big shiny faces, occasionally asking, "Did we flare them?"

--One flight of decoyed ducks, at which every gun in the blind emptied the magazine. At the end of the segment three dead ducks were shown, presumably from this event.

The "news" in the interview appeared to be multiple ways for the reporter to ask whether Huckabee was ready to declare he was running for president, followed by various ways in which Huckabee said, "Not telling."

Why oh why does the press give any attention to this crap? I couldn't care less whether Huckabee or anyone else likes to hunt ducks, and if I stay up to watch the late night news, there just has to be something more newsworthy for ABC to spend my time on.

Jeff,

While what you witnessed is far from the norm in the northeast, it is a time honored tradition in his home area to belong to a "duck club". While Gov Huckabee was not a guide, or had done the scouting he was a participant in that hunt. Over the years the Gov has been on many outdoor shows both fishing and hunting. While not what you or I would do for our own hunting there are many americans who go to lodges like that on a duck hunt, is it any different than going to a lodge in Mexico, the yucatan, or even south america. I do appreciate the guy is a sportsman and would have our backs unlike a bundle of other possible candidates. JMHO

P.S. Nice avatar!

I've got nothing against Huckabee or duck clubs (though I'm glad the duck club phenomenon has not come to my hunting grounds). I just don't think it's newsworthy--not on Nightline, and it wouldn't have been very entertaining on the Outdoor Channel, either.

I can think of lots of things Nightline could have asked Huckabee that would have been newsworthy. None of them came out of this interview, which, I suspect, was orchestrated by Huckabee's PR team.

Given the situation we find ourselves in at home and abroad, whether or not a potential president hunts ducks is way down near the bottom of my list of qualifications. (Where he stands on wetland protection and restoration? That gets my interest, but it's just one of many factors.) I didn't like the "John Kerry hunting geese" PR stunt, and I don't like this one, either.

As for this being the norm in Huckabee's home area, the one thing I did learn in the interview is that he's no longer an Arkansas resident, but has moved to Florida. Now, if he was out beating back the gators with Hitch or hunting down exotic invaders with Dani, and posted on here about it, I'd be real interested. :)

Jeff,

Politicians are politicians.....some are nice guys and women and some are......___________... you fill in the blank. One giant problem is that they all have "handlers" that massage the image of the politician and they mostly do a stinky job and leave a nasty taste in a persons mouth. A second issue, journalism, they are out to sell or buy air time and viewers. Do you think they give a flying rat about the "real" issues in the environmental field?

I would rather have an honest politician that said what he/she believes and follows through and is not tainted overtime by power and the drive to get reelected. A duck hunter would be a nice bonus.

"Honest Politician" - there's an oxymoronic statement if I ever heard one. When you find one of those honest politicians let me know would ya?

No one who wants to limit government can ever speak the truth as they would lose so many selfish votes. Is it harder to say "I'm going to decrease spending and here's how I'm going to do it" or is it harder to say "I'm going to increase "investment" in the State/Country/fill in the blank". Which will lose you more votes. They all lie and they all have reasons for being there other than to serve us. IMO. I'm really liking Chris Christie and Scott Walker for standing up for what has to be done and making tough decisions. States and the Feds are all broke and at least they are proposing very specific cuts that they know will hurt them politically later. Once again - IMO.

The attributes it takes to become President today will never get us the type of individuals you discuss.

We need to go back to pressing some reluctant statesman or stateswoman to run. The pervasive "American Idle" mentality will never let an honest, decent, homely candidate like a Lincoln to ever come to power. We are mired down with ego maniacs and quite frankly, a Mike Huckabee comes across as to nice a guy for the job.

Way to get it going again Jeff. Why don't you try and not have an opinion or care. Its much easier said than done...I feel your pain. Hope to actually catch up with you next fall. Been carving a bit I'll send some photos of them and my mmbgf from Bath soon.

Yup Jeff stirred the pot.....I like to stir it once in awhile..without a stir you can not see what is below the surface..

Matt

Yeah, I guess a post with about a politician, the mainstream media, and roboducks, with a hint of regional duck snobbery and a low shot at duck clubs could just possibly be seen as cabin fever poop-stirring. LOL.

It was really not my intent to stir the political pot . . . I was mostly mad at ABC News for wasting my time.

Sorry. Back to ducks, folks. Nothing to see here, so just move along . . . . . . . . . .

I've had some brief dealings with the governor.
He hunts, but thats not his passion.
He doesn't have the time to do it the same way most on this forum would do it.
As gov, he had more time.
I don't care for the big club hunting situations. Not my thing. IMHO that isn't really duck hunting but whatever.
The gov could have chosen from 1000 venues to sit for an interview where he evades the question. The one he chose was not an accident. Most viewers have no idea what duck hunting is about. It didn't show in a negative whack em and stack em light. cultured and refined but outdoors.
running political campaigns is a business and that was a video of a business meeting.

again IMHO, he's unelectable. He's a nice guy and holds conservative views.

Was this "club" a preserve, or were they shooting "Real" ducks..The first are usually pen raised, flighted preserve ducks, the other, wild.

Remember that Nightline is a left leaning news organization. To me I think they hoped showing Huck shootin' a duck would be a negative for the ex Gov. Is he electable as Prez? Maybe, maybe not. He is though a viable vice prez candidate. Was it used as publicity? Sure was. Would I rather have him around than the current Prez? You bet! At least you know where Huck is coming from and his moral value system.

Watched the video and thought it was pretty well done (Oher than showing that "Vortex" whirlygig thing :)) Check out the old campaign AD he did with Chuck Norris!
