hello everyone,

After talking with Eric and getting permission I would like to inform y'all and get any opinions on having a mini decoy swap.

This is the rules and directions I had for it to make it as simple as possible and still be fun and enjoyable. Hopefully with announcing this far in advance will give everyone time to get something started.

Decoy mini swap

Dates: November 4th - December 9th
Ship by December 15

The rules:
1. must be carved out of normal decoy material (wood, cork, foam, wire/canvas, etc....)
2. Bird can be in a swimming or standing pose and can be in a regional style (crab pot buoy, Currituck style, bobtail, etc...)
3. Must be no longer than 4" in any direction (excluding bases/mounts)
4. Can be any waterfowl or shorebird
5. Can only post completed birds that you carved unless posting for someone who is not computer savvy


How it works:
1. Anyone can post as many birds as they want once the swap starts until the end date.
2. Once you post a completed bird that earns you a "swap ticket"
3. At the time of the deadline I will take all the names and put them in a hat and draw names and specific bird posted in pairs
4. I will post the listings on the thread and those people send their birds to each other
5. So if you enter multiple birds you will swap with multiple people


This a fun way to get us motivated to carve something different and to gift and receive birds from friends across the country.

Everyone is welcomed to join no matter what skill level you are (believe me the first few I did were terrible) so no judgement

Try to ship them by the 15th so the people receive them by Christmas.
 
Now you have me figuring out how to make a tiny canvas over wire decoy.

Interesting idea.


I am wondering about the 4-inch size limit. Is that a standard nowadays in competitions ?


I have made several 6-inch birds for kids (and for business card holders) - but not sure I could work down to 4 inches. I'm a knife guy - not a power carver.

I believe that 4" is a standard competition size or maybe smaller for the cocktail birds.
The reason I chose that size is because it was the size set from previous mini swaps that I was apart of in the past, it was good in that it kept everyone in the same range and wasn't a big variance in sizes being traded.

If everyone would rather a larger size range then we can do that, just know that someone will be carving birds that are 3" long and you may make an "uneven" trade with a 6". Not that it's a problem or really "unequal" but just know that it would be the same size.

And Steve, I carve with a knife, in fact only one right now but I am making two more to hopefully be ready to use soon. I am only 23 though so I have no issues carving something 3-4" with the knife. So I am open to changing it to a larger size of everyone is good with that.

Please stick with the 4-inch limit - I was just curious.


No promises - my Fall is jam-packed with work - but I may see if these old hands and eyes can work at that scale.

Okay Steve,

Thanks for the input and I hope to see you get one or two out. I'm hoping with the early notice that people will have time to carve something. It is fun to get birds from across the nation from friends that you might not have any other contact with.
 
This forum has created another side of waterfowling for me. I might get in this carving now and maybe someone will get serial #1!! I am a mold maker and stamper so the carving tools will be a breeze to make at least.

looking forward to seeing everyone's creations.
 
Glad to see some birds being made. Hope to get some more wood ducks made up soon
 
This will be my submission, might have a second, but definitively in with this guy, he just needs some paint and trim tomorrow night and he can go in the mail!
