Mark W was kind enough to share some of his home state fishing success and so I thought I would do likewise. Here are just some of the fish caught and brought home yesterday (Saturday). All I can tell you is they were caught in Iowa, any more info and your kids might have to grow up without their daddy. ;>) ;>)

Jiggin' or tip-ups??

Carl,

Jigging a small 64th ounce rocker style ice jig tipped with a maggot. I kept a few small ones to use for bait on tip ups sometime in the future.

WAIT.....Maggots?!!!!!!!

So you went out in the freezing cold....used maggots for bait and caught "bait".....don't use all that up I'll be there about AUGUST I gotta do some of that.....

Steve

Never used maggots, mainly waxworms & mousies.

Nice crappie and that perch ain't bad either.
No matter what Steve says about them being bait size. Some bait is tasty! :)

I went ice fishing once....up in Manitoba...way up North in Manitoba...other than driving the rental car at a 100 miles an hour and pulling on the emergency brake while turning the wheel on glare ice it was the most misearable day of my life.....its cold....the water is hard....the fish fight like dead fish...its cold....you use maggots for bait.....even the big fish fight like overcooked spaghetti noodles....they can't jump cause THE WATER IS HARD and their on the right side....its cold...the fish bite cause they want to die its so cold.....and did I mention its cold?......

So I'll do y ice fishing in August....when its NOT COLD...and where I can see the fish jump....and when people aren't using maggots for bait.....and when the only ice is in the cooler keeping the beer cold...which is the only thing I want to be cold when I fish....

Steve

Just sayin- maybe we need a discussion thread on using game/pan fish for bait. Maybe Mark could talk to some of his CO pals and clear up what may be used for bait and what should be eaten. BTW, Very nice fish Dave. Makes me almost want to get out on the ice ALMOST. But it does make me happy that today is one day closer to open water.

Tom,

Minnesota does have rules concerning "bait", no game fish at all. Iowa however, allows line caught bluegills to be used as bait.

I got a kick out of this one, Dave. Nice write up. All I want to know is this. Where are the bullheads?

I agree with Steve. Bring on Spring!!!!

The only fishing I did when I lived in M was ice fishing. We almost always caught fish and always had a good time. Considering the time of the year it was one of the best options available.
