Missouri River Conditions?

Does anyone know the water on the Missouri River near the east Nebraska, southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri borders. Google Earth shows what looks to be boulders forming wakes in the current. I was wondering about the depth and if there were obstacles there that would take the foot off of a lower unit.

I thought about huntin it one year and called Iowa fish and game. Talked with a warden that runs thr section of river I wanted to hunted. He had some really good information. The Missouri was not a beast I wanted to tame last year.

Dave,
I haven't hunted that section, though I've hunted the section in central Missouri quite a few times and have investigated hunting the river here in northern Missouri. The river moves along at a pretty swift clip and has numerous wing-dams that are installed to help prevent bank erosion (they are huge piles of rock that extend from the bank about halfway out into the river). You will find numerous sand bars when the water is low later in the year. There can be quite a bit of debris after big rains upstream, so going slow if you're out in the dark is a good rule to follow. The channel is marked with a combination of buoys and markers on the bank. I recommend running it during the daylight the first time out just to get a feel for what's out there and which side of the river you need to be on to not run into the wing dams. Also, be careful cutting corners on the bends as I've heard quite a few stories of people coming to a sudden stop on a sand bar just under the surface.

Wading can be an adventure as well. I've gone from 1' deep to over my head in about 3' of drifting in a boat (or the time it took for me to test the depth with an oar, turn around and hop off the side....to find that we were no longer over the shallow water) Just be careful and wear a life jacket!

You do need to be aware of where the state boundaries are at. Here in NW Missouri one bank is Missouri, the other is Nebraska and along one stretch, BOTH banks are actually in Nebraska.

edit: My experience is below Kansas City, so there my be other issues (though i wouldn't expect any boulders that aren't part of a wing dam) further north. The wing dams will definitely be rough on a lower unit.
