Mitten Recommendations

Rick

I hear thee! I have shied away from it all my outdoor life, as every year in my old local men would fall through, and DIE (including one of my foremen at the Steel Mill). A very good fishermen I knew when asked if he Ice Fished would say - "The only ice I like is in my drink".

Sounds to me like your father did it the correct way. I admire that.

But please explain, as Waterfowlers why we have no problem inching our way out on a frozen lake. To sit in white outfits, and pass shoot birds goin' in and out of the only open water around? I still shake my head at having done that Stupid $hit when I was much younger. Always had to GO where the birds are.

You are correct though "ICE FISHING??"

No matter, I'm still gettin' the mittens & muff cuz it is a tad chilly here, and I WILL use them. Got to burn a Cabelas gift card, and the ones Todd recommended look industrial strength.

yes - but we did that when we were younger

they do as they get older

My wife (who did not know me back then) just shakes her head when I say I have hunted ducks in weather like this, shoving broken ice sheets under shelve ice to make a hole, or standing still too long and having ice form around the waders

the Amish have an old German saying "we get too soon old, and too late smart"

Vince, I use a heavy tight wool on the outside & a sheep shin liner on the inside They are Fireman's gloves. I then spray them with a water proofing agent to make them more water resistant. & I really like them for those really cold days. Hunting out of my sneak box or lay out boat, they are not a 100 % waterproof but they still keep your hands warm. When picking up a large spread of decoys I use what the lobster men use a rubber with a felt lining.I have been very happy with this combination. Paul

Tod~

Was I happy to see those! I have a pair just like them that I have had over 40 years. Only problem is, mine were made by Nokia - when Nokia served the commercial fisherman. They are Nokia "Eskimos", made in Finland of "Vinex". I have searched in vain among Nokia's current product line - but even the really good cellphones do not keep your hands warm when picking up the rig.

Looks like I need to order a pair as "backups".

All the best,

SJS

I would love to find some tightly woven 100% wool gloves and order them in xxl, toss them in boiling water, form fit them to hands after they cool a bit and then plunge into cold water. Treat with lanolin for "waterproofing". Thats what Maine lobster men used to do to make a rugged warm and water resistant glove.

Gentlemen, one and all

I very much appreciate your suggestions and advice. I knew I would get good responses from the members here. It looks like I'll be getting more than one pair, and a hand muff as well. I have always been a big fan of the disposable hand warmers, but as a long time PA guy, Zippo is a iconic USA brand. This is good, as now I can add mittens & more to my vast array of hats, gloves etc. Stuff we need to be "Out There", where we belong.

Chuck - How long is it gonna take for you to knit me a pair of those Red & White stringers? I'll wear em while walking our dog Fred. I'm already thought of as "the nutz artist from PencilTucky". Might as well keep folks talkin'......

Thanks again fellas

Sorry, I sew, but I don't knit. So are you doing the tough-man, sitting out in the cold and wind? Or do your buddies have a shanty? If the latter, stop worrying and get a lantern, it will warm the shack right up. Dad just had a nylon portable deal and we'd routinely be fishing in shirt sleeves. My uncle always liked sitting out, but his box/seat hat a compartment that held a lantern kind of between his legs, with a vent that let the heat rise up so he could dry/warm his hands, but not worry about the monofilament touching the hot metal. He even had a glass window to let the light shine forward to keep fishing into the evening.

Best wishes

I have a pair of these for both me and the wife for ice fishing. I have never used the hand warmer pouch and only use them to drive the UTV our to our spot on the ice. I have used them in actual air temps down to -35 degrees and do not ask why I was out ice fishing in that let alone driving 8 miles out on a lake on a ATV - much younger and not as smart back then...

Very warm and my wife has never complained about cold hands.

The Extreme Mitts, and the Eskimo Mitts really look like they Do the J-O-B! As I was told long ago "It never hurts to ask", and again Thanks for the input from everyone.

Chuck I believe they have pop up huts of some kind, and on better days just tough it out, but man the WIND never stops here! As the nearby Wind Farm proves.

Also, does ICE FISHING always include Adult Beverages, and who becomes the designated Driver?
