Mold on steering wheel--boat of course

Anyone have a solution for removing mold from steering wheel on a boat---I've used the traditional ones and they're effective but slow. I need a faster method.

Thoughts go with Yukon Mike and his upcoming surgery.

half and half clorox and water, a soft scrub brush and some direct sunshine. you should wear gloves when doing the brushing. if you have mold there look around as you probably have it other places as well.

Best,
Harry

Jim I start out with Dawn dish soap. If that doesn't work. Windex If that doesn't work. I put on rubber gloves and use Bleach straight from the bottle. After all that I know the mold is dead. I am assuming the wheel is some sort of plastic. Mold does leave stains in or on plastic. I found that out with some lawn chairs. The next step I painted the chairs with Fusion paint. That worked well.
Take care Pete

The steering wheel is plastic and I'm wondering if mold and mildew are the same thing. After pulling the winter cover off the boat the wheel has pin point black specks but worse this year as I left the boat out. I'll try your solution---thanks!

As I mentioned to wis pete am I talking mildew or mold or are they the same. In checking the rest of the equipment on the boat the plastic steering wheel seems the only thing affected. I'll try both of your suggestions---thanks!

Jim, On canvas I've used TSP (trisodium phoshate) to kill mold. I think you can find it by the wallpaper in a box store. it is used for washing down walls I think before paint.

Actually mold and mildew are related but different plants. Any chlorine based cleaner/sanitizer should work. Always follow with sunlight. Keep airflow going in the off season and keep the humidity less than 13% and you shouldn't have future problems.
Best,
Harry

Thanks Harry:
There is nothing on the rest of the boat, just the steering wheel. It's been too cold and rainy here even to work on it. Did that storm hit you yesterday?

One cup Jomax mildewcide, one cup bleach, one cup water. Scrub it with a brush or rough sponge. Wear gloves. Repeat as necessary.
