More uses than just floor stain...

After the comment about predators, I called in a coyote in closer than I've ever had one this morning.

Tod,
Couple years ago, I had a coyote come charging in on my decoy. He ran right up to the hen decoy and put the brakes on just before he would have collided with it. The circumstances certainly confused him, because he started circling the decoy at a distance of about 3 feet from it. He finally took a swipe at the decoy, tearing the soft foam body with his toenails.
Tried to get my phone up to take a video, but was unable to accomplish that. I was able to raise my gun. [whistle]

Just keeping it real. :). I get to hunt too.

I set up on a bird before daybreak in the rain on a ridge that I've worked a lot of birds from over the years. He wouldn't budge, but a second bird sounded off about 400 yards away on the roost and then strolled over and was down about a half hour after sunrise. Nice. Got him in the chiller before 9 and spent the day running errands (I'm always amazed that it is less expensive to get the oil changed in the Superduty than the Prius).

Tod,
Nice bird.
I've always said, I find it easier to kill the dumbs ones, than to try and outsmart the wise ones.

I hope folks are getting out and enjoying the spring. I found this guy strutting in one of my favorite areas mid-morning, but couldn't seal the deal. I was able to set up right in his lap and get him the next time around.

And I see a guy strutting around in his favorite crocs. [w00t]

Nice bird, good reason to strut.

Thanks guys, I am enjoying my season just picking away at it. I've hunted a lot of days, but not too hard. Pressure was really off with the double gus got during the youth season. Beautiful day here. A ton of migrant songbirds moving through and the perfect temperature. Very nice. I am sitting against this oak until my butt gets sore and then heading home.

sure beats sitting at the desk staring at a computer until my eyes get sore!!

Nice bird!. You know, duck hunting is great but nothing gets the heart racing like a big old gobbler booming away.

Cool, congrats.

no story? you just sit on your back stoop and wait for them to walk in range? [ninja]

The story is that this bird was from a group of 4 or 6, depending on the day, gobblers and associated hens that was strutting daily about a 1/4 mile from where I hunt. I have had visions of them being in the woods where I hunt, since it is a logical place for them to show up. I had the whole mess of them in my lap that morning and it was pretty exciting. Story goes that I had just packed up to move to a new spot and was standing there mouth agape and one of the gobblers appeared cresting a knob at 20 yards having come in silently to my calls. He walked off putting, but it was clear he wasn't too concerned, just annoyed. I got ready and called and the whole group was on top of me within seconds at 10-15 yards, but at a bad angle and there were too many eyes to do anything. I let them move off and called again and brought a hen right in and a gobbler that I almost had a shot at. The rest of the birds strutted just out of range (actually probably in range, but too far for me to want want to shoot and possibly shoot one of the several hens). I was able to reposition and get aggressive and turn the whole group and get this bird to peel off the group. When I shot this bird there were at least 3 birds in full strut out a ways beyond gun range. I feel like I came out ahead getting one given the situation.
