Morton buildings...

Growing up that is what we always called them anyway... the metal sided pole barns. I'd like to put one up, something like 30 x 50. What are the major cons to these buildings over stick built or wood pole barns? I've looked at a couple Morton buildings and a Lester and they woudl suit my needs on first glance. This would be 2 car, 2 trailered boat (with the ability to pull the trailer through) and assorted junk storage. I was thinking crushed stone floor, but obviously concrete would be better.

On another note does anyone have a suggestion for windows CAD software that is free and would be easy to use and one step up from MSpaint or graph paper for doing the layout for a project like this? I would like to monkey around with building layout.

Get a quote from Morton, then go to a GOOD lumberyard and ask who they recommend and get a quote from them. Pay attention to the spacing of the poles and trusses, the quality of doors and windows and ask for references. A post building and a stick built are pretty much a wash on material costs...where a pole comes in cheaper is the cement that a stick built needs for footings and possibly frost walls. I'd suggest eave and gable end overhangs of at least a foot. How tall a sidewall are you thinking?

Here's where I got mine, 40x60 once I had the frame up which took a weekend with 3 friends and a few day laborers I had it done in 3 weeks. I went with 3 foot over hang.

Morton was about twice the price.

Thanks for the info Lee. I have a rough quote from Morton, I have to find out from the town if we need a footer or if they can do it on posts (I guess some towns around here are picky on pole barns). In our new neighborhood there are a good number of new morton buildings, so there must be an advantage. Labor costs are high in this area of the world. I need to talk to wetlands to figure out the siting, then I can get a good quote from Morton and a couple local guys.

As for sidewalls I was thinking 10', When I build my tollman, I want a wheelhouse on it and would like to be able to drive it right in.

That is a heck of a way to tell him how to build a building... Get some friends and round up a few illegals.... You are lucky as hell... My neighbor used a day laborers center ,aka illegals, and one of them hurt himself... Now he is getting sued for hospital bills and lost time at work.. Careful !!!!

one thing id recomend is in a pole barn if you are gonna just use is for parking and storage not actual working on car kind of work is too look into asphalt usually alot cheaper just a thought

Thanks Mark, but I'm not looking for a do it yourself on this one, with the new house I need to set up a woodshop and garden, plus coming off a complete remodel of our old house (siding, windows, roof, much sheetrock, most trim, all doors, 2 bathrooms, etc... in 6 years).
