Motor problem

I have a friend who bought a boat off of craigslist. He has a perplexing problem that maybe some of you guys may be able to help with.

His motor runs fine, except when it just cuts out on him. For no apparent reason it just stall out. He starts it up and it runs fine until the next time it repeats the stall again. Any suspicions on what could cause this to happen ?

I have no clue as to what could cause this to happen except maybe a clogged fuel filter. Your thoughts ?

Thanks, Bill

He might have a tiny, but big enough to block the jet, hunk'O junk floating around in the carb. bowl. After it stalls the junk is free of the jet until the next time it gets sucked in. Happened to me and it took 2 years to find it - BOTH times (20 years apart)

I don't know how big of a motor and what kind of fuel delivery system the boat has but I had a similar problem once with a 6 gallon portable tank. I ended up having a hair line crack in the nozzle that sucks gas from the tank to the fuel line and the air that was getting into the line caused the motor to cut out especially when throttling up. I got a new gas tank and was all set after that.

I've had a water problem like that. The water seperator was working but when I would hit a bump it would send a shot of water into the carb and shut it down. Took me an embarissingly long time to determine the problem :( as it was intermitant depending on weather/water conditions.

my 40hp yam had an issue like that at high rpms it would shut down. Pulled the carbs and cleaned them, new tank and hardware, new filter, ball, checked the fuel pump everything was ok. The motor was shutting down due to the fact the oil pump was failing at high rpms. Now I just mix the oil and gas like the good ole' days and have no issues.
