Motor turns too easily (I think)

Getting ready for duck season. This is going to be the year I have everything at least a couple of weeks before opener which is in 5 weeks or so.

With my newly repaired motor, I noticed something the other day while out running it. When I let go of the handle, I think the motor turns the boat too easily. It can do it quickly when at speed or slower when puttering around. I don't think it should turn on its own this easily. How tight should this be? Should the boat continue to go straight when my hands aren't on the tiller? Is it set right the way it is? Where do I adjust this if I need to do so? (1996 Evinrude 15hp and I can probably google this)

The motor also needs to have its idle adjusted. And more camo material added, bearings greased, air in tires and I'll be good to go with that boat.

Mark, there is a clamp under the motor that will tighten and adjust how free the motor can pivot. Likely some grease fittings too. I like mine snug enough that it won't "fall" over if I let go. I only would let go at idle, picking up or setting decoys, or netting a bird, but if you make it too tight then you will be fighting with it while you run. It is a trade-off.

Thanks Dave. I can?t find a clamp of any sorts but there is this screw. Looking at the parts diagram, this is it. I have turned it and it does adjust the friction. Doesn?t take much of a turn to make changes. Good deal. One more thing off the list.

If you have an adjustable trim tab, little fin thingee in front of the prop, you can adjust it to counter the torgue of the engine/prop.
You should be able to let the handle go, but don't, and the boat should track straight, and turn with equal force applied.
 
In case someone else has same issue with a Merc, I?ll add that my Merc has a lever on the lower front that serves the same purpose.
