Must See in America

If you do go to New Orleans, make a trip over to Dauphin Island & Mobile, AL, making a stop in Biloxi, MS on the way!

You could spend a month in each of these states and never scratch the surface; Utah, Arizona, New Mexico. They are loaded with National Parks with beauty beyond your imagination. Makes you want to go back. To relate with that it would be like going back to Banff for the 25th time and still seeing things that you never saw before. The Southwest is magical.

I was on the NPS website and the World Heritage website and I was surprised how many of their listed treasures are located in New Mexico. I know that I could easily spend the rest of my lifetime exploring the USA so I will have to be selective and settle for a few highlights.

Thanks everyone for some great ideas. I look forward to hearing more and eventually seeing some of the sights.

Here are a few.
  • Crater Lake
  • Sutter Buttes
  • Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta
  • Buffalo Jump outside Bozeman
  • Yosemite
  • Lake Tahoe from a mountain on the north-east side of the lake
  • Pacific coastline around Ft. Ross/Jenner
  • Empire Mine - Nevada city

How about Crater Lake in Oregon...It is an amazing sight when the sun is shining...Plus there is a walking trail around the Crater and a hotel on the rim...I have been an it is awesome...One of the sights to see in the US...

John... I have been reading up on the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Cuyahoga River. A person could make a convincing argument that this was the birthplace of the environmental movement that cleaned up the Great Lakes and that persists today. As for ducks... yep, nothing in Ohio. LOL

Last yr we hunted turkeys in Wyoming near Devils Tower.Very impressive ...Also visited Mount Rushmore which was awesome.Driving through the Black Hills was also a great experience.Make sure you see the Crazy Horse monument.that is a dont miss.

NOTHING in Ohio

Oh my gosh, that made me laugh! Seriously though, many people would say that about their own state, but each one does have some cool places. I haven't been to most of the places on the list in Paul's original post. Except for New Orleans, that area is cool and very different. I also second Al's vote for New Mexico, we've been there a couple of times and the scenery was breathtaking. My parents took us to California when I was 11, the memories of the redwoods, sequoias, and Yosemite still impress me. Coastal Maine is a favorite of our family. We haven't made it that far up the coast yet, but I do like Two Lights near Portland and also Booth Bay. As far as New York State goes, it is very diverse. Many types of water. The Adirondack Mountains are also very nice.

Don't miss the Redwood National Park or Jed Smith State Park in California. The best drive on the West Coast would be from Coos Bay, OR to Arcata, CA. Another neat drive is Hwy 199 from Grants Pass, OR to Crescent City, CA along the Smith River, the largest undammed river in CA.(gets you from I-5 to the coast. To see all of the best of the coast you have to go west out of Eugene, OR, and come back to I-5 at Redding. It is a very long, slow, and stunningly beautiful drive. Maybe the most beautiful place in North America). Other awesome must sees: Mount Rainier, Olympic Nat'l Park (hard to get to), Crater Lake, Yosemite Nat'l Park, and the Grand Canyon. Portland, OR is a neat town to hang out in, so is Seattle, lots of breweries. I would skip San Fran, but I wouldn't miss Napa Valley. If you end up in the 4 corners area, the drive up from Durango, CO to Ouray is pretty cool. Also from Cortez to Durango. Telluride is a very neat place to stop a couple of days in the summer. It took me years to see all these places. You could spend months exploring Oregon and Washington. I would not miss any of these places to see New Orleans, and I was born there.

Thanks for all the feedback and ideas. I am compiling my list of places to see and have made it my goal to see a good chunk of them in the next few years . We will knock off a few this summer but I realize we will barely scratch the surface. Through all the suggestions here I found my way to the National Park Service website and I will continue to review some of the wonderful parks and pick a few to visit.

I am sitting in a hotel in Las Vegas this morning and looking forward to catching a plane home in a few hours. Having been here on business since Sunday I can say I have had my fill of this city.

Vegas has an immediate impact on my desire to stay in that town...get out fast and run away from that arm pit of nonsense...
