My boat project

Folks Thought I would post a few pictures of my latest project, I started on the hull late last summer and plan to have the whole project finished and ready for the fall season.Once the hull is finished I will be designing a hard sided aluminum blind that will be fully grassed out for the season , I'll be putting a 140 Suzuki prop on it for power. Pat at Speciality marine has sold several of this model to folks in Africa, New Zealand and the US, the guys in Africa put a 200 Yamaha on it and got 70 mph!!

The basic hull is an 17-1/2 X 7-1/2 orca hull form Specality marine in Oregon, all the metal was cut out by Alaskan Copper and Brass in Seattle.

I'm putting the boat together with Tom Emerson and Toms son in law Luis Perez, Tom is a retired boat captain for Alaska Fish and Game and spent most of his career on Kodiak Island, Tom started building custom aluminum boats on Kodiak over 20 years ago and built it into a vey well respected business on Kodiak. Tom's son now runs the shop and daily operations while Tom spends his time between Ellensburg and Kodiak.

This is the second boat I have done with Tom the first one was a 18 foot jet sled that Tom built for the Department I work for as a rescue boat on the Yakima and Columbia river. Last summer we plucked 14 people off the river with the new boat. It's a very stable platform for us to work out of and for our divers to get in and out of,

The boat has a 38 degree bow and tapers to 14 at the stern with a delta pad for getting you up and out of the water when on step

Port side grass rail made of heavy walled aluminum

Combination dog ramp and steps on each side of the outboard, We put these on the jet sled and it makes getting in and out a breeze.

We added a 4 foot bow deck that is stout enough to hold a dance on, the forward hull is totally enclosed with a water tite hatch for storage.

The entire hull is enclosed and full of foam for positive flotation, from figuring the amount of foam in the boat it should float over 7000 pounds.

Hope you enjoy the pictures

WOW, is this going to cut into your turkey hunting time?

For an old guy with bad knees, I don't advise the dancing on the deck and I thought you would have put a whole ladder's worth of those steps.

If you are using 2lb denceity foam that comes out to about 117 cu ft of foam, doesn't it?

Nicely done Fred. Looks well thought out and well built. Looks like a quality boat meant to be worked hard, which unfortunately is something given what you often see.

Guys thanks for the comments,

Robert we do have some decent ramps around here, I bought a 3700 lb capacity EZ loader trailer with rollers for the boat, when I loaded it on the trailer for the first time the boat was sitting 4 inches off the cement on pallets, I was able to winch the boat up onto the trailer with out much trouble, I'm thinking if the trailer is in at least 12-18 inches of water I should be able to load it with out much fuss, Time will tell with that part of the process.

The blind will be 1x1-1/2 tubing for the frame then sheated with aluminum, I still have to do some research on skin thickness for the blind, it will be a 2 piece bolted to the gunnels My plan is to have about a 32 inch top opening and the blind height will be about 43 inches from the floor to the top The top edge of the blind will have tracking so I can enclose it for travel by sliding 3/8 X 32 plywood into the tracks to keep the road grime out and gear dry, there will be a front door that opens to the bow deck for exiting the bow, the stern enclosure will be canvas much like a Bankes or TDB with a zippered dog door for entry from the back swim step on each side. I'll also have a slot for the tiller handle to stick through so I can run with the stern blind up.

Brad and Brad, I'll be at turkey camp this spring but the boat is a first priority,,,, The other Brad,,, thanks for caring about my old knees BTW I hiked 5 miles Friday and it didn't hurt to bad!!!

I may have to inspect on my way to the turkey woods. The pony express still hasn't delivered the invitation.

5 miles!! I haven't even dreamed about going that far on flat ground. Lots of catching up to do before we siege the big mountain.

Consider yourself invited. The hike felt good at the time, But I was a little sore the next morning, we should set a date for Stuart this summer and get Crowder to come along!

We'll have to mix it up and do either west ridge or north ridge. Google them up and tell me when you are ready to go.
