to death. I've tried a couple of off the shelf shampoos but no help. Any suggestions? I'm about to try Head and Shoulders or Selsun Blue. Poor old dog's so dryed out he's turning white.

have you tried to give him lipiderm? My buddy gives his dog lipiderm advanced and his coat /skin is drastically improved. The vet tried to sell him some for 30 bucks a bottle but I bought 1 large bottle with twice as much (120 capsules)for 12 dollars. Exact same bottle and everything. The dog could also be defficeint in zinc as well. I saw this with my dog and started to give "vet approved" tablets and the conditioned resovled it's self.

Everytime you bath him your drying his skin out more and compounding the problem......

A vial of my dogs blood is on it's way to Michigan State U. for thyroid testing. A symptom is very dry skin. May be the extreme, but just something to consider. How's his weight?
 
A trip to the vet is coming up. I noticed some spotty thinning of the hair also and I know that could be linked to Thyroid. I never thought about zinc though. Also he was to the vet a couple of weeks ago after tangling with a critter and noticed his weight is down about 5-7 lbs and I haven't changed his food portions or anything. I wanted to get him though his regiment of meds and his leg mended before tackeling another problem. I was hoping there was a shampoo out there but like Steve said (and my wife told me so) I'm just drying him out more shampooing him.

It could be his diet. Try changing foods to something without chicken and corn. I fed my dog Science Diet for years and her scratching got bad - like you described - at about 7 or 8 years of age. I switched her over to Nutro Lamb and Rice and her problems cleared up half way through the first bag. When all of the Chinese gluton poison stuff was going around, I switched her again to another brand. I forget the name, but it was an all natural, made in the USA food that was vacuum sealed in an foil bag. Yeah, these foods are a bit more expensive, but when you spread that out over the 40-50 pounds, it is not that much. Plus, the health and happiness of your dog will be well worth it.

When I started researching ingredients, I was amazed at what was going into some of the foods out there.
 
Ed,Jon is right about proper food.I'm lucky enough to have a close friend that rescues WIMERS.SHE HAS ABOUT 8-10 IN HER HOUSE all the time.Like us,she is into natural foods/whole foods.We both feed the best food (ingrediants wise) we can find,and currently feed Timber Wolf, Elk.33lbs is $46.They get groomed three times a year except the occasional barn bath when Cass rolls in critter crap.For bugs I use BiO guard except Dec,Jan,Feb.Vet asked me if they had a reaction to that,but I haven't detected any.I split a half can of dog food in with the dry at night and add broth.They also get a couple vitamin addatives in the evening meal.They don't know they are spoiled .Like us,no one gets out of this life alive.Hope the vet gets it straightened out.
 
shampoo out on the market. I am not sure if the pet store chains carry it, but if you go to any of these new "NATURAL" pet stores I have found it. I still use it sparingly, only when the dog is really stinky.
 
my mother in law went into the buisness of grooming for a short while to help while she interned. I still have her grooming book and the recommended washing/ grooming is every three months. Now, Sobe goes in the stinky swamp mud here and she only gets hosed off when we get home.
 
give him some benedryl to stop the itching, about 1mg per lb of weight. Fish oil tablets, one in the morning and one at night, will help out a bunch.
