My first banded snow goose

JayMo

Congratulations! Any other colored bands on it? You will never forget that wonderful bird - ever. It's part of you now..........and cooked in a Wok, tastes pretty darn Good.

That is fantastic, Jay. Please share with us when you find out all the statistics about that banded snow. Congratulations.

No problem..
It's great how quick it comes back. I had brought my I-pad with me on the trip and sent the info in that day I shot it. The info came back in minutes..

Wow - What a different world we live. It used to take weeks, if not months to get waterfowl band info back. I have nice pile of old duck & goose band certificates, that they used to send back.
Now it takes only a couple of min. to get back the info..........! " Old School" that I am, I still like taking out that info and reading it. Brings back lots of good memories.

Just a note: I have a old duck band on my car keys (have done so since the 1960's). Have my super market discount bar code on the key ring as well. A week ago a young cashier, after using the

bar code..........looked funny at the duck band and read it. She looked at me like "what the heck is this?" Told her it's a duck band. She had never seen one before, and she apologized for being nosy.

I told her don't be. Seemed to be a good way to get folks interested in waterfowl, that would never be aware of the life we love & live.

I didn't really want to wear a wedding ring when I got married a few yrs back. I found this site that makes duck & goose band wedding rings. And you can put what ever numbers and words on the ring you want. So I had one made. (See below). And I get the same reaction. When people look at it, I say it's a duck band. And they have no clue what I am talking about.

What is really interesting to me is that you shot a GREATER snow goose in Arkansas. They are typically a east coast bird. When I put that info in flyways.us, only 35 banded greater snow geese have been reported harvested in Arkansas. All of those were banded either in Quebec or way up north on Baffin or Bylot Islands.

I actually got an e-mail from the biologists asking for verification of this encounter saying it was unusual.

Vince,
Your duck band must be really worn by now. This one that I have on this set was put there 10 years ago. The rest are in the closet.

That is interesting, Brad. I am now wondering when the waterfowl biologists will encounter that first Greater Snow that has warts on the upper mandible?
I am starting to see quite a few lesser snows crossed with Ross's down here. More hybrids.
