My Kara Hummer build...

The Kara looks great Lonnie.

For a seat, a bench is easiest, and you can use it as a backrest while layout hunting.

Looks great, Ive thought about building one but don't know if I should go cheap or all out like I did with my scaup build. I just find it hard to put time and effort into materials which are inferior.

Did you build per original design and inexpensive materials or did you use more expensive marine plywood, more epoxy and glass, etc.?

Also, what do you think your final cost and weight is "as built"?

Lonnie,
I like it. That paint job is sweet. You did nice work and the ducks will never know you are there.

I tried to find Marine Grade Plywood (Okume) here in Iowa but couldn't. All I could find was Ordered Online and was going to cost $95 per sheet plus shipping. That wasn't an option so I was forced to use 1/4" birch that was of the best quality in the area.
That was only $15 per sheet. And I ordered 6oz Fiberglass Cloth online which cost about $65 with shipping. I chose to use Poly Resin since it was cheaper and Overall, I think I have about $250 in it. Including paint & primer.
The only thing that I really changed is that I cut a foot and a half off of it and Built a transom out of two pieces of 3/4" plywood. The total weight of the boat is about 100 lbs. I am going to work on accessorizing it but that shouldn't cost Too much.

Nice looking boat! I built a Kara about three years ago and it has changed the way I hunt.
I used to hunt mainly big water after the wood ducks left but not now. It goes and hides in
almost anything. Last year a young friend and I slid it across about a 1/4 mile of ice to a open hole.
(we knew the water was only waist deep) We shot our ducks when everyone else was frozen out!!
I think you'll love it, John

Nice. I like the transom modification. What are you going to power it with?

Nice paint job as well.

Ed.

We have a 3 hp Evenrude that we are going to try first. It needs a little TLC first but until we get it tip top, I am using the Kayak paddle. My wife and I took the boat out for the Maiden Voyage this last weekend to make sure everything was well. She floated and tracked very well. I am very pleased. After I got back home, I started to make a back rest for it. Then today I registered it and got stickers so I can have a motor on it legally. I plan on taking it out this weekend to the lake and starting to build a blind for it. I'll make sure to get some more pictures for yall.
