my new boat a copy of my grandfather scull boat

donald,

Does the weight get permanently mounted once its in or is it removed once in awhile ? Say for hoisting up in the rafters to store in winter. If it comes out once in awhile, wouldn't you be better off with a couple of more manageable pieces rather than one large one ?

And yes, its definitely a thing of beauty to look at

yes, it is removable, it's made that way. but if i have three pieces of lead and put them all into the front box, how do i get them out if i don't have a handle on the bottom one that goes to the top? all the floats i have ever owned, have had just one solid piece of lead, not pieces. any ideas?

Donald just put a board across the bottom of your mold for the second and third weights so they will stack. Make your handle just tall enough for your hand and make the board just tall enough for the handle.

Donald,
Nice work on the boat but its nicer to see the tradition live on. I like the boat but i enjoy the family involement. Good Luck with the new float. Thanks with the historic help with mine.

no problem- first thing i would do with yours is get rid of the motor mount and get a good set of oarlocks-

I am casting my weights this week and going to try her out this week- note if you ever see or talk to Tom Johnson- he has the org. pic or my grandfather in the float- i want it back- he "borrowed it" per say--

Thanks Donald

Very nice boat(s) Donald. You might want to try making a mold and pour concrete (with a metal handle installed in the top for easy removal ) it's a lot cheaper than lead and was commonly used in the old days. If the concrete is not heavy enough, add some lead weights until the bow leavel is right then add that much lead to a second batch of concrete. A hundred pounds is a lot, you may find you'll only need about 30-50 pounds that far forward.

thanks Dave- thats a good thought-

i will try it- take care- love the pics you post-

thanks - Donald
