Hi Guys,

This is my new toy for BWCA tripping. She is 16.5 foot long and weighs in at 34 pounds.

I can hardly wait to see that batch of photos? Your pup coming along?

Very nice Dave, that one looks geezer light. Are you brining it to Lacrosse? See you there. BTW has anyone reserved camp sites yet? I haven't but will try again today.

I have plans to be in Northern MN the last week of Sept. visiting my friend in Atkin MN. I hope to slip away from his place for about a three day trip into the canoe country. I'd like to bring Ginger along but she first need to get acquainted with a canoe. I do plan to take some camera equipment and I'm not sure mixing the camera stuff with the pup all in the same canoe is a good idea.

Yep, each new paddle style boat I've purchased, has been lighter than the previous one. My wife thinks it time I start to thin the fleet a bit but wait, I just saw an ad for an 11 foot cedar stripper over in Wisconsin. I'll bet I could sneak that one home and into the garage before she notices.

Yes I may bring this one, along with my Chuck-Huff, over to Lacrosse next weekend. I'll be camping but it will be up in the corner of Iowa. I plan to drive over just for Sunday from there. I think I'll try to bring my pup Ginger along as well. Maybe I can convert you to a Chocolate lover! :>) :>)

Looks fast. Don't worry, the duck boat paint won't add much weight.

I'm always interested by the regional differences in canoe style preferences.

Out here solo boats are rare, there isn't a huge premium on weight, and the "all around" boat that can do up to Class 3 whitewater and still be a decent lake boat. People like big canoes--anything under 18 feet is small, and there is a market for 20 foot freighters.

Over in the Adirondacks you see a lot of pack-style canoes--short, light, often better paddled with a kayak paddle.

In the BWCA it's all about lightweight for the portage and speed on the flats, and solo boats seem to rule.

Down south it's all about solo whitewater boats.
 
34 pounds sounds like heaven when it comes time to put in over your head. Enjoy. Regarding your pup and the canoe. I have a rubber backed non-slip mat I put in the bottom of my royalex canoe for my lab. It becomes her spot and she doesn't slip as she moves around. Without the mat even as she shifts her weight she would slip and "wiggle" the canoe-with the mat no worries.

I like your new ride. I'd LOVE to have a canoe that was that light. But at least I know that my canoe will outlive anything I can do to it. (barring someone t-boning me). but it is a HEAAAVY canoe.

Don't see why you can't introduce your pup to the canoe before you head out on a backwater adventure. You've got plenty of time. Plus, if you have a really good waterproof bag, then a 5 gallon bucket with one of those twisty top lids that are waterproof that the bag lives in, you shouldn't have any issues if you or her accidentally flip the canoe. Not "convienent" for taking quick snap shots, buuuuuuuut that's what we do when we take two dogs in a sit on top kayak (mine has slipped and fallen off several times in his attempts to get comfy alternating between sitting and laying down) and Steve's really nice camera hunting. He gives me his little waterproof point and shoot to hold and use if I wish to take pictures. He nor I trust me to keep his nice camera safe from the water given how often I trip over my own feet. But, that set up works great. I don't recall what kind of bag he has but i'll ask him if you're interested. But we've never had issues, even when the bucket went for an accidental dip into the marsh.

Just a thought....

The construction materials look a lot like my poke boat. You are going to love the lightweight aspect. Congrats.
 
Great on the portages...Make it up to Russel Falls and take a picture from Chimny Point...I miss that place...
