my new ride

I am happy to report that in the space of 3 days I have been able to complete the sale of my don warren bbsb and the purchase of my new (to me) TDB classic 14. The best part of these transactions has truly been getting to meet 2 great DBDN members.

Paul Boundy, here in MA and now the new owner of the don warren, is committed to a strict regimen of crunches in the off season to assist him in the fine art of sitting up to shoot. Paul - I wish you great success with this endeavor and remember that it only works if you can avoid taking a nap !

Mark Van Sciver was kind enough today to meet me halfway with the TDB.........a trip of about 200 miles for each of us in the pouring rain and then was thoughtful enough to give me 2 handsome black duck decoys that he makes to go with the boat ! Keep an eye on your mailbox Mark !

I am looking forward to creating the mother of all layout boats using the TDB without the blind and the also being able to photograph some sea ducks on
calm days while using the blind a short distance outside of the marsh.

One of my first projects will be to paint the interior with non skid added and I am considering adding a very shallow deck or some interlocking tiles to give me some space above any water............any suggestions greatly appreciated !

Dick, when I stiffened up the floor in my "14 classic" it created a low spot in the stern, as I didn't put the floor there, so the water drained and pooled back there. I have a bilge pump ther to remove the water.

Sarge,

Welcome to the TDB club. I guess you got a little spoiled in mine in January. I'm interested in how you set her up without the blind, please keep me posted on that.

Thanks guys...........first project is to sand, clean and paint the inside of the hull and I would like to hear any suggestions for type of paint. I figure I can add some of the polymer anti skid on the floor when I hit that. I am wondering how important it will be to wipe the surface down with something, maybe an alcohol base something after sanding to get a good bite with the new paint. I think someone on here sells paint, maybe Lou ? will check and see.

The other thing I want to do is to do some test drives and check out how she sits and handles with the little 8 yammi which I am pretty sure will be fine, not fast, but fine. I have an idea about setting up bow out toward the deeks instead of stern out and I want to see how that looks, how high I want the "lounger" .......where to put the waterproof camera case...........etc.

This puppy has so much room compared to the BBSB that I risk creating a camo camper.........that gives me an idea !

Sarge,

Meticulously clean the interior before sanding. I've had good luck starting with a detergent degreaser (TSP?) followed by either denatured alcohol, acetone, or lacquer thinner. Lou Tisch is a big fan of lacquer thinner. Once the surface is clean then you can sand.

There are a bunch of non-skid additives available. I've been using Skid-ex. It's available at local hardware stores.

Because it's so thick, you shouldn't mix the non-skid and FME before application. I use two roller setups. One is straight FME and the other is just non-skid (separate roller and separate pan). Roll the FME on a small section and immediately follow-up with the non-skid roller while the paint is wet. Once everything is dry, use a hand broom to remove the loose non-skid and then apply a top coat.

Did you splash the big boat yet?
