My spare time in Louisiana

Here is what I have accomplished down south in the last month...The teal are all balsa wood...Just in time for the early teal season...Decided to make a handfull of shoverlers, a few gads, and four ringnecks...Shot 3 blues on sat and 4 on sunday...All the decoys except the front bluewing which was made by William Powel will actually be hunting this morning in a WMA down here by the name of Beouf, leaving after this message...Mid-morning hunt, but birds seem to be moving better after all the hunters leave the area...Might be hot but still offers me a little time in the field before work...Working second shift I must sleep everyonce in a while or I might have had the energy to be out there before daylight....All these birds shown plus others I am in the works now, will be hunting Neepewa, Manitoba here in about 3 weeks...Picture quality seems to be poor, but then again it could be the decoy quality as well...Hope ya'll enjoy!

Nice spread dude,

Did you get bit by a gator today?

Make sure you bring those foam decoys to Neepawa with you. I plan on slapping them with steel..................

Best,
Steve

Kristan,
Have been wondering how you were after the move. Seems as if you've adjusted well. Any good reports on D'Arbonne refuge?

Thanks guys,

Willy, You may notice a few of your favorite birds if I remember right...The ringer in the picture...I still have 2 more to finish sealing and painting...

BB, Been wanting to commit on your spectactular goose hunt...Glad to see the old one still having the drive to pick up the birds even though the body is telling em to slow down...I have your coot down here...It has seen the swamps lands of Louisiana all the way up to Claire, MI...

Chuck...How about balsa coots...I have been carving balsa pretty heavy the last few months...I do not have any black cork here...

Steve, Can't wait...You think I can just get by with shooting my 20 gauge with 2 3/4" #7 shot...It is working pretty well down here! LOL

Kevin...I have been up that to D'arbonne but since it is a Federal refuge they closed it to teal season...I have focused more on scouting Russel Sage, Tensas, Ouachita, and Boeuf since I am able to walk everywhere...When I get my boat down I will scout D'arbonne in October...I have already mapped and GPSed a few open canopies on the Green tree holding areas...Just patiently waiting for the water and the season...Since I work second shift that gives me a lot of free time to sleep in and get up to hunt around 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. when the WMAs close down...

Here is a picture of a couple of blues I shot the past couple of days...The other bird didn't look so hot after a shot of less than 10 yards...Both decoys are some of the balsa decoys I made this past month, I ran out of dark colors for the one drake that is why they both look different in the body...Their light and tuck into a back pack.. Which makes it easy for me to have two hands ready. So when I am wading in with my gun over my shoulder and a large staff to push away any fangs or leather backs that think I am part of the food chain...Only met up with a few snakes and a few small 4' and less gators...The snakes think they are 10 ft tall while the gators say the hell with it and just leave...I hope that is all I ever see wading in...

Sounds like you are having fun with the "critters", Kristan. Be careful. Good luck during the regular season and keep the pics coming.

Normal tailgate pictures are not really great. But when you add in your hand carved decoys they are superb!

I like the new decoys you have added to the spread.

Are you taking BG out to the swamps with you?

Everytime I see the show Swamp People on the History channel I think about you.

Sorry I missed your call yesterday - I will try to get ahold of you before I head over to Belgium next week.

Thanks again...

Brad,

Yeah both dogs BG and my newest pup Dixie both go...It is not as bad as you may think...The biggest worry are the snakes then the gators...There are lots of gators but they tend to be more scared of you...I keep the dogs close...Most of the hunts I have been on are flooded natural grasses which have more snakes then gators...Dixie got her first retrieve yesterday on a bluewing hen...Pretty excited for her being only 7 month old...She is coming along fine...Still have a lot of work...But I am sure before the season is out she will have that instinct kick in on what she is supposed to do with minimal training...You oughta try coming down this year or meet me in Kentucky for some layout hunting...During the split this year down here I plan on hunting those weekends in Kentucky...

Regards,

Kristan
