My tool! I broke it!

This is crazy. That's almost the same pliers I use when I make canvas decoys... when I can find it.
There looks to be plenty of nice old parallel jaw pliers on ebay.

Tim

Great minds think alike...they are the perfect tool for a decoy seamstress.

It is better to have your tool break down from too much use than deteriorate from disuse.

Picture is dark, and it looks like the metal is dark but not rusty, correct? Are the jaws and cutters in good condition? You looking to deal? I'll make you the same offer I made Carl (a seamstress can't have too many tools...)

Actually, I don't know...I just happend to have purchased it from Ebay recently and it hasn't arrived yet. I'll bring to Ohio, you can look it over, if it looks like its what you want we'll make some kind of deal.

Wasn't sure what your intentions were, I suppose I might have to break down and do an Ebay transaction...there's a first for everything. You'll like it, they're mighty handy cutting and shaping wire.

My dad has a pair (heck, I'm pretty sure he had them long before I was born) and the metal on those is very dark but not rusty. Might be a petitna from lots of elbow greese applied over a long period of time. Mine had some shiny metal, but as you can see some pits were developing. I got them from a older neighbor who was garage saling off all his tools.

I have a pair of pliers like that, must be 30 yrs old, use them for fishing, cutting mono, taking hooks out. they keep on going. you can find similar ones for sale new,

never heard of using them for making decoys.

I though I was the only person that had that pliers LOL. Interesting how they put the pattent date May 6 1890 and the date built May 19 1892

You will soon find out the company is long gone, they use to make the ticket punchers and other tools for the rail road.

Good new is that manley and sargents others have copied that design.

Sargent bought Schollhorn. Still manfacture the same plier design in Conneticut

Thanks to a couple good friends here on the forum, I made deals and now have not one, but two Bernard/Scholhorn style pliers...

Wonder what the big deal is...Parallel jaws:

Groove down the middle of the jaw:

Pass through handle allowing long wires to go through:

All combine to make an awesome tool for shaping wires:

A opposed to the half assed grip you get from standard pliers:

Next up...my favorite scissors:

I still can't find mine. :(

Maybe you accidentally put them in a box and mailed it...and coincidentally I now have two...

I wish but don't worry. I moved last year and everything is around just not out in the open yet. I could swear I used it a few months ago but must not have. I don't use that heavy wire too often so I can manage with a less desirable pliers with side cutters. I just wanted to get in on Make Chuck Feel Guilty Day.

Just make sure to leave the patina on them, polishing them will dimish the value when you tell your story on Antiques Road Show in 20 years!
And make sure to post some pics of them being used.

Pliers | Industrial | SARGENT TOOLS

I noticed that this tool is still made in the USA

This tool must have been bought and used by the military. There are a lot of them around. I have one that was very stiff. must still have some cosmoline in the joints yet. I learned a lot about this tool that I inherited many years ago.
