My try at Derek's decoy idea.

I wanted to try to make the roundest looking block possible, so instead of cutting a slice to put the foam in through, I dialated some small holes with a pencil and inserted the tube. The foam pressure built up pretty good, and it wasn't a big mess of overflow like I expected. I still think it would look better with a 3D head instead of a silly, but that's just me. I plan to make a few more. If you missed Derek's Zumwalt's first post about this, its not too far down if you want to have a look. Don't go buying new canvas either, a pair of old jeans has a nice amount of stretch to them. I wanted to try using an old t-shirt too. Leather would be cool! Another thing I discovered is that by putting paint thinner over the glued joint the Gorilla glue didn't foam out as messy as usual. Maybe you guys already knew that?

Cool little decoy Mike.

Did you put the paint thinner on the glue joint before or after you put the glue on...? I like Gorilla glue but not the foaming mess.

Thanks for the tip,

Jeff

I put the glue on the joint like normal, screwed it together, then "painted" the corner there with a brush full of thinner. I don't know exactly what happened, but it seemed to make a crust quickly and contained the external expansion. The thinner all evaporated and that's what I got.

Mike -very cool - looks great. The gorilla glue tip is one I have never heard of and will have to try out.

one quick warning: be careful to let them cure all the way before painting. I might have mentioned this in the past but was not sure. The VOC of oil paints on uncrued foam can cause it to shrink down/disfrom if paintred to quick and not allowed to cure. This is one of the reasons I like using old laytex house paint for base coating.

Thanks Mike. I remember the first time I used Gorilla glue I didn't use enough clamps and the results looked like somthing that had escaped from a lab experiment.....

So what would be the mark up on a "suede leather decoy" ? It might even be too pricey for LL Bean! One might have to market that one thru your friendly "Orvis" location. :>) :>)

Nice Mike, and thanks for posting the pics.

I have done some Eider that are similar, but cut out the middle of the vertical board.
I then put the foam in through a hole in the bottom board, allowing to fill with only
one hole.
Then I can take the cut out portion, weight it, and attach it to the bootom as a keel
and to seal the hole.
Does that make sense?
I can take pics the next time if its unclear.
