May have a job opp up in Narragansett, RI.
Its a long shot but you never know.
Any words of wisdom about the area, cost of living, housing, etc???

Hey, That's some change from Alabama. I Live about 30 Mile by water from narragansett. Lots of Mashes, although I've never gunned them, Great SeaDucks. We are planning a trip there with Keith Mueller next fall. As far as cost of living , its the Northeast Corridor between NYC and Boston, it aint cheep. Great people, I have some very good friends that are also in the charter boat business, there the best. Good luck

Carl ,

I live about 10 minutes north in North kingstown Ri. we love Narragansett for it,s beaches stripah fishing and just a cool place to explore , there are areas close by that still to this day have bunkers from world war 2 , real cool . Alot of old $ there with some real old houses and family plots . let me know if i can shed more light on the whole area , we love it but we have never lived anywhere but South County RI.

Just the word conjures up the image of Captain Quinte (Robert Shaw) smashing a Narragansett can aboard the Orca.

Just don't drink the Narragansett Beer, or at least 30 years ago when I went to college in New England.

I have some family in the area, I don't know a lot about the waterfowling opportunities but think you might be able to find some salt marsh hunting, resident geese and lots of seaducks.

rhode island guy here, lived in narragansett for a couple years, if your planning on living in Narragansett prepare yourself for the winter months when all the college kids have the summer rentals for the winters. that should be enough of a warning. Everything else the other guys have said is true, fishing, beaches, etc.

just curious, what sorta work are you in to make the trip all the way up here?...supposedly rhode island has one the highest percentages of unemployment in the country...not that im a part of it but still...just wondering

Carl,

Only thing I'll reinforce is that NE within a reasonable distance from the coast is very expensive, the pay raise better be good to make up for it. Obviously it depends on the exact area, but paying 3-400 K for a nice starter home in an area with good schools, etc... is easy to do (and I mean starter home, like 1500 square feet max).

Given your sporting life, I would think it would be a good fit. Lots of good inshore fishing, offshore is not too far (by NE standards anyway). You already shoot and eat buffleheads, so you are all set in the duck department ;).

It would be habitat restoration work with the govt.
Like I said, its a long shot, I think if they offer me something it will be down here in Alabama since this is my geographic area of expertise (so they say).

Thanks for all the input!
Y'all pretty much reinforced exactly what I was thinking.
Like I said, it's a long shot and we're really not sure if we are ready to move even if offered but you gotta keep your options open!

Good luck Carl. They do have a cool accent up there!................Kevin

We don't have accents here....the rest of the country does :-)

The further inland you go the more resonable the house market is. I'm 35 minutes from the boat launch and about 35% less cost for the same house near the shore.
Great sea duck, and plenty of good deer huting in the state forests.
The inshore fishing is great with striped bass, fluke, blackfish etc...
Offshore is also great with cod, tuna, shark, swords, mahi etc...

It would be the Feds, so you would have a cost of living adjustment, right?

Hunting opportunities can be tough to find and I kinda worry about the long term ability to hunt in New England, but I think we are in kinda a golden age where the numbers of hunters are declining faster than opportunity, so if you can exploit that in some way you can have some spectacular hunting. Like I said, that isn't good in the long term and what is the long term, 10-15-20 years?

You would be closer to your family, and I dont' think it matters to the wife.

Neither Jen nor I are from here and the way we are looking at it is that we can retire with a lot of equity in our home and move it to someplace more rural after retirement.

I worked for this outfit for a little less than a year. I know lots of good folks at this place. If for some reason you're looking....there are usually a ton of applicants ie one job I applied for internally and was fairly well qualified for didn't work out for me because a phd that worked at NASA got the job instead. It's that kind of company.

Not reallly wanting to leave may current job, just looking at options. Moving to RI, or anywhere in the NE would put us closer to my family up there, so we are considering it. Just has to be a great offer to give up state retirement & benefits, pull up roots & move that far.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

I live in Rhode Island mostly because of the summer water access. Striped bass & bluefish can be spectacular.

If you are a tiny bit focused you can do fine duck hunting but I doubt it measures up to where you are now.
I don't get excited about the local put & take trout fishing but manage to get up to Maine a couple times a year for quality brook trout fishing.

Upland hunting is mostly put & take pheasants.

If you can get permission the private land canada goose field hunting can be incredible.

Also high property & state income tax. I wonder if I'll be able to afford to live here when I'm retired.

Coastal Maine around Bath/Freeport looks good to me from a cost/benefit point of view.

Ive been living down here for the past four years. Way too many people up here. I'm looking to move in the next year or two since ive graduated, provided I can find somewhere better to go. Lots of stripers, blues, tautog, sea ducks, and deer and everybody and their brother trying to hunt and fish in a very small area. Depending on what you are looking for, for a house, the southern part of the state is normally pretty expensive. You pay alot for what you get.

(I tried posting before but I don't think it worked - so if this is a duplicate of sorts I apologize)
