Natural Bee stings remedy.

Recently, while googling a remedy for poison Ivy I came across the medicinal uses for common Plantain. Not the starchy, banana looking thing but the common weed in everyone's yard that we sometimes call snake weed.

Yesterday my son was over and playing catch with my granddaughters. He yelped when a bumble bee stung him right on the ankle bone. Right away I grabbed 3 young plantain leaves, chewed them up, and put the poultice on the sting and under the sock. Within a minute the pain was gone and all he felt was a little numbness after a few minutes.

BTW: Plantain, along with Jewel Weed are both remedies for Poison Ivy and Oak. Not sure about Sumac but I think they also work for that. I don't get the stuff personally but know a number of people who do.

Pete,

Thanks for the heads up on the poison ivy remedy. I always seem to get into that stuff at one point during the year. For any kind of stings I have always just used what I keep on me all the time, Copenhagen. It works well too in a pinch.

I knew about jewel weed. Didn't know about the plantain weed for bee stings. I just use water and baking soda. One time when i was brush cutting a christmas tree lot i got stung 62 times, it was not fun and i used a lot of baking soda.

Pete, I sure appreciated knowing what you found out. Thanks for sharing and for that picture. Seems to me that my lawn in Wausau, was made up of lots of plantain.

I probably would have grabbed poison ivy and chewed that up. Hope your summer is going well and keep a ND trip in mind. Are we going to get together in Lacrosse this year, I always look forward to that one. The way this year is going so far I hope I don't have something pop up at the last minute but Lacrosse is penciled in for late August. Some days I want to go back to work to rest up!!!

I know Al, once I saw what it was I realized it's everywhere and always has been, in this part of the country at least.

One point of consideration: If you or a relative has an auto-immune issue associated with bee, wasp, or hornet stings, going this route only achieves local analgesic benefit. Remove the stinger and venom sac immediately.

Adding an anti-histamine like Benadryl diminishes swelling and immediate topical itchiness, since these alter cell membrane permeability. Additional measures may be necessary for those who have already had an anaphylactic response to a sting, or for multiple sting situations, like immediate intramuscular injection via an epinephrine-pen. My cousin nearly died (actually her heart did stop beating for several minutes while she was in the Emergency Dept.). She suffered from seizures from that incident on...
