I need to purchase some new chisels for work. They do not need to be small precision chisels but larger woodworking type. I am tired of box store chisels that dont hold edge and do not resharpen well. I would like to have some that can be sharpened on stone like a good pocket knife. I appreciate any advice.

Lee, I have had good luck with both Hirsch and Two Cherries. Not sure what kind of job site use you are looking for. I keep them in the woodshop and don't generally let them travel. They polish up and sharpen really well for me.

Lee,
I like my Irwin Marples wood chisels that I use for building furniture and such. I also have a 1 inch wide all steel wood chisel made by Cresent Tool Company which is more robust.

Any of the chisels made with A-2 tool steel will hold a razor sharp edge for a good while. Lie Nielson for high end and the Stanley 750 socket chisels for a great cheaper chisel. Both are made of the same steel, but you will have to flatten the backs of the 750's more than you will the Nielsons. I own several of both.

If you really want to get fancy you can try these. A bit pricey but most dont have to sharpen them more than once a year. I think they are D0-2 steel and are cryogenically hardened. I have a couple fishtail chisels made by them. I sharpend them up to a 16K grit stone and Im yet to touch the edge again.
