NDR - Alone in the Wilderness

Have you guys seen this documentary, "Alone in the Wilderness"? I picked it up at a camping store (I was there to pick up some new climbing shoes and add to my rack of gear). It's about this Alaskan guy who decided to literally leave civilization for awhile in the early 50s, and move into the back country by himself.

He filmed how built his own log cabin with the minimum of tools, on the shores of a remote lake. He grew his own vegetables, caught his own fish and hunted his own game. Very awesome! At first, he wanted to see if he could last the first year by himself - he ended up staying there for 30+ more years and had to leave when he was in his 80s!

Just wondering if anyone else has seen it also. It's not very long, only an hour. The DVD was ~$30.

Yep.... I have the book too.. I is my favorite movie... Dick's lowere 48 home was about 48 miles from where I grew up.

He is a true man!!!

I saw it on "cable".... Great Show. He was an icredibly talented craftsman. One of my all time favorites. If I remember correctly, at the end of the show they said that the cabin was still maintained by the forestry service.

PBS shows it periodically. He did a nice job with the footage. Beats Survivor Man hands down...

yep, seen it there too a while back. Very cool...I think that is my retirement plan

yeah that is one kick the mule in the butt piece of film....very interesting,,,well done,,,and worth the watch,,,makes one wonder why we live in this modern chunk of plastic junk society and pay the price of being a slave to it and for what gain?

I've seen it on PBS a couple different times. It seems to be shown as part of their "viewer favorites" programing. I highly recommend it to anyone who has not seen it. He certainly made living in the wilderness look appealing.

What's interesting is how long he was able to stay there on his own.
It would have been nice to see how well he adapted to the city life when he could no longer live there on his own.

I am not sure where he actually lived the last few years of his life... but Primgar, IA where he his home was, is a town of less than 2000 people... so I am not sure city life was an issue... although ... having any one around would be a large change I would think!

Seen it a couple of times now, would love to read the book.

Always reminds me of that book about a kid outside of New York that "ran" away from home and lived in the Catskills mountins / wilderness on his grandparents property or something like that. As a kid that was a great read.

MY SIDE of the MOUNTAIN!!!!! My favorite book... I first read it in 3rd grade... My wife bought me the hardcover trilogy.....

I think it's also been titled "One Man's Wilderness". I've read it a couple of times, and have also seen the film. It is a great story of resourcefulness and homesteading. It's a good book to come back to from time to time.

The first time I saw it was on PBS. Then I read his books. It certainly resonated with me as a young man and I even talked to my wife about it. Of course she humored me and let it run its course. What a way to live your life.
