NDR... any AR shooters out there?

I am looking into buying an AR type rifle for highpower match competitive shooting in three position (standing, prone, kneeling). I used to shoot competitively in college and would like to get back into it and the AR's look like a lot of fun.

Does anyone have any experience with these guns or these types of shoots? I am looking at Bushmaster, Armalite and Rock River.

I shot my first one yesterday a kid i work with made his own with mostly stag parts. It was awsome if i owned my own shot gun(i have one on extended loan from my uncle) this would be my next gun purchase.
If you want to check into building one brownells has a plug and play interactive thing on their site

Buy a lower with a kit and then drop in a two stage RR trigger. After that buy an aftermarket upper dependent on what kind of shooting you are doing. Check out ar15.com, more info there than you can ever read.

I don't and never have done any competitive shooting shooting but I do consider myself up on the current AR situation. I've owned 5 AR's, and have done research on the topic tell I was blue in the face. I feel confident in telling you to avoid Bushmaster and Rockriver. It is fairly well known they are not among the best choices when it comes to AR's, (not talking about price difference). That being said I've owned two Bushmasters and they've both been great. But according to the current brain trust their Quality control has gone down hill as of late. I would recommend you spend some time lurking around on AR-15.com. There you can learn everything and anything there is to know about these rifles.

Don't be afraid to build one from a stripped lower. It is super easy. If your not retarded it should take about 15 minutes. You can find step by step instructions on how to do this, (with pictures) on AR-15.com. If you go this route you can order every part you need online with no hassle, (except the lower)----which you can order online but will have to have it shipped to a dealer.....By building it yourself you can choose each part that goes into the rifle from the ground floor up. You're going to of course want an awesome trigger ext.....You can put together exactly what you want this way instead of buying a rifle off the shelf and then spending a bunch of money modifying later on.

Do research. The number of manufactures and options available are ridiculous. You should spend a good bit of time learning before you spend your money on something. If you don't you'll wish you had.

As John mentioned, AR15.com is the holy grail for AR enthusiasts. The best place to start you research. I worked for Lewis Machine and Tool. During my time I helped develop the LMT308. My brother has worked as a machinist fro LMT for 20 years. Their guns although a bit more expensive are listed high on the list as well as Les Baer, Rock River Arms, Armalite, Knight Armament and many others.

Ar's are a lot of fun and relatively inexpensive when shooting .223 caliber.

Thanks for all the replies. I took a look at the manufacturers you mentioned Ed and I could only find national match rifles from Les Baer, Rock River and Armalite. In addition, I know Bushmaster also makes a national match rifle. Any suggestions of which you would reccommend from those and why?

I see that a couple of these companies make rifles that are legal in nj, ny, does anyone know the laws as what makes an ar style rifle legal to own in NJ.

I also am interested in buying one , not to match shoot , just to shoot. I would not want to buy one that would land me in the brig

I would go to your local gun store in NJ Tom, they are going to be your best source of local NJ laws.

Good question. Gene Stoner - Armalite, Les Baer - Les Bauer, Mark and Chuck Larson - Rock River Arms and Karl Lewis - LMT all got their starts with being involved with Springfield Armory. These guys are all within 50 miles of one another. All made in Illinois with the exception of Les Bauer who told Illinois to take a hike over the AR controversy here and moved to LeClaire, IA. Now with Gov. Quinn stepping up the AR debate again since the Aurora issue who knows whats going to happen with gun manufacturing in Illinois. Hopefully nothing. Quality wise and this is only my 2 cents and not meant to start a debate I would list LMT, Les Baur, Armalite and Rock River Arms. My son has a DPMS AR-15 made in St Cloud, MN which I think is a nice entry level gun but the fit and finish could use a little honing and deburring. We noticed a couple of brands of magazines that have issues with the DPMS. DPMS, Bushmaster, Remington Arms is owned by Cerberus Capital Management which they call the Freedom Group..
