ndr but I cant believe the cost of ammo these days shesh .416 rigby

The only true parts of "The Ghost and The Darkness" are the two lions, the location, and the engineer. It's still on my top 3 movies list. Awesome movie.

Anybody know a low / ballpark price on a SxS rifle to shoot that stuff? Just curious.

As I was getting into Dave's initial post I was thinking, "If you're in the market for that ammo, price is no concern!"

ALL ammo is getting goofy right now. When I was in college, I was fortunate enough to be taken under wing by a fine old fella that built rifles on old mauser,enfield-P, and springfield actions. He also worked up handloads for some of the cities big $ gents that went on overseas hunts and safaris. We built and loaded everything, up to and beyond the .458/.460 range. We'd build HEAVY test rifles for bench shooting, to work on loads. While a .458 can kick, it's pretty tame when it weighs 40#. Also, I've pulled the trigger on a lot of rifles, up to .50BMG barrets, and I still say a 3.5" 12 ga turkey load in a 7# gun is gonna rock you about as much as any rifle out there. I've shot a lot of big bore, magnum rifles, and none ever 'injured' me, though some I'd not want to shoot for fun. However, I've been busted up and bleeding after some magnum turkey load shooting...broke my nose with my thumb being driven back into it under recoil. I also had a bud that broke a finger during recoil, by a trigger guard with a turkey load. Ouch!

Boy are you right Bill,
I have an 870 with a scope rail for slugs and I stuffed it with some of the winchester partition slugs to sight in off a bench.
Hang On Baby. I didnt get a scope rash but I sure knew which end of that thing I wanted no part of after a box to get on the paper.

I ran the recoil numbers after I got home, and just as you said.......a 416 looks good if it weighs anything over 8 lbs compared to that shotgun.

Sure would love to see a picture of some of those springfield actions after you guys worked them over.

The Caldwell lead sled has likely been a Godsend for slugshooters and such. I wish I had some pics, but that was in the very early 90's, and it never occurred to him or I to take any pictures. I know some fellas gave him game photos where they were holding his rifles. He died back around 2002. I wish I had a picture of his 'arms room': 12x20 steel and concrete room that was wall to wall with collector grade mausers, P14/17s, springfields, garands, etc...both military and commercial. That fella loved his rifles and his history.

As some trapshooters taught me: "Kills on one end, maims on the other!"

I'd pull the trigger on anything once, but some things, probably not more than once!

Depends on the caliber and where it's made. some of the "best" English doubles go for prices greater than a luxury yacht. You can get "drillings" a little cheaper. Friend of mine bought a drilling while he was stationed in europe. The gun was a 16 ga. side by side with a 7X57 rifle barrell beneath the shot gun barrells. He said the gun had been used to hunt wild boar in the Black Forest by some of Hitler's buddies before some GI "liberated "it.

You can by some black powder doubles pretty cheap if you want to go that way.

If you are rich enough to be hankering for a double rifle price is probably not a problem.
Let us know what you find out.
Best,
Harry

Ithica mod 37 + 18" deerslayer bbl. + 1oz. slugs fired off a bench= NO FUN!!! but the deer don't like it either, and it's much easier on the sholder standing up or sitting in a tree.

I'm not in the market for any double rifles, just curious, as I figured they would be rather pricey considering the quality and precision it would take to regulate two barrels made for firing small missles!

If I had any serious $$ to spend, it would go toward 16ga Winchester 21s and 16ga Parkers. Ahhh, someday!
