Hey Hitch , Josh or anyone else here done business with or heard of a camera place called www.soniccameras.com? They have a new Canon 40d body for only 299.00 Something sounds to good to be true here don't you think? Anybody know the "rest of the story"? Thanks Ed

Don't know anything about that place but I'm sure the rest of the story for the camera is fairly simple. They are selling a couple year old design in a poor economy. There are a lot of cameras that are dropping in price. You can get pretty good point and shoots for $100 now, who'd of thought that a few years ago? Haven't paid attention to the SLR's but I'm sure there is a lot of competition trying to sell some of the older/simpler designs. Quick look at ebay shows them selling for about $350 so $300 is probably an honest deal.

isn't rebuilt there are other things that you will find when you call on one of these "low cost bodies"....

first question....do you want the battery with that? Ummmmm, well yeah can I use it without one? NO.... "ok then I'll need one"...do you want the cheap bastard battery that last for a dozen shots or the five hour battery?...and before you answer they'll hit you with.... "and the price difference is only $10.00"....so, OF COURSE you take the five hour battery and that bumps the price by a hundred bucks...

second question....do you want the battery charger with that? Ummmmmm can I charge it without one?...."no you fool...what planet are you from anyway"...."well then I guess I'll need one"... "do you want the one that charges the battery in a week or an hour"?... "well gee I would like to use the camera occassionally so I'll take the 1 hour one".....good choice you just increased the price of your camera by another $100.00...

third question....do you want the phot card with that? What? "the phot card idiot....you know the thing that the camera stores the pictures on"....."oh you mean thats not included"..."DUHHHhhhhhhhh did you really think you were going to buy a camera for the advertised price"?....and then they'll add...."you aren't from America are you"?......

there will be a whole bunch of other questions when you get into the lenses, (you will of course need a wide selection of filters, and special covers, and camera bags and extended warranties and ADDDDDDDD INNNNNNFFFFFINNNNNITTTTTUMMMMM)....

So be ready....I just went through it myself...I THINK I saved some money but by the time I was done I had reached the point where I'd bluntly state to the person on the phone "here's the deal...I want a price and availability on the following...AND IF you ask me one question, any question, or give me something other than exactly what I'm asking you for then I WILL HANG UP"....you would not believe the number of people I hung up on.....

Good luck on whatever you end up with.....

Steve

Thanks guys. I just did a serach on this company and found many many negative responces and complaints about these guys, (Sonic Cameras.) I guess Ill stay away from to good to be true prices.. Thanks again Ed

RUN, Run like the wind......

There are really only a couple repuable on-line dealers. BH Photo being my favorite...

Dutch is right on...

Along with Mike I found that site and in reading the thread found this site " resellerratings.com "
On this site on the top..... camera & photo then also on the top..... store ratings.
This was very useful in buying on line. There are a lot of rip off artist out there. When they get caught, they just change there name. At the same time there are a bunch of good ones
The prices will vary and you can get a good deal but if it way below everyone else watch out. It may be a gray market product, no warranty from the camera co. Authorized dealers will stand by the product.

Ed,

Something that sounds too good online...probably is.
Be very careful, there are MANY MANY camera knock offs that get sold online.
Always buy your warranty'd gear from a store you can return to if you need to...;)
