NDR: DIY lanyard/sling weaves?

Good morning all. With the recent spate of great stories, exquisite photos and inspiring projects, I feel like the rube, bringing the room down a notch. Regardless....

I've recently been messing around with making my own call lanyards out of P Cord and wonder about moving onto constructing a few rifle slings. As for the lanyards, the Cobra stitch makes a simply done, slick pattern that is satisfyingly beefy, lays flat over the jacket, and can incorporate quite a few add-ons (in terms of incorporating new calls). The other benefit, I found, is that I now always have 35+ continuous feet of P Cord on hand, should the need ever arise. What about slings though? There is no shortage of crafty sites which teach different stitch/weave patterns, but I'm wondering if there is anyone who has any real-world guidance on choosing one pattern over another. As always, thanks!

Geoff,
no rube here.

All bring something to the table.

Got any pictures of the ones you made for the calls? A how to on the knot or stitch would be cool.

There is a variation of a cobra/macrome stitch that gives you a 1" wide piece when done with 450 para cord. If you are having that long of leftovers you need to start with less length to reduce the cost per lanyard. I know when I make lanyards how much string to use by laying on the floor along my hearth. Incorporating cobra and a round braid I will use about 60 feet not including the drops. The excess is used for drops and I end up with several pieces about a foot long and a couple 6 foot pieces that I use to make duck straps with. Try 10-12 less feet of cord on each piece when you start and see where that leaves you. buying your cord in bulk will also decrease your cost per foot if you plan on selling them in quantity buy 1000 foot spools of the common colors. Black, tan, choc brown and olive drab you can buy smaller spools of other colors for variations.

Hey Tom: Oops, my bad on the composition of that post. What I should have said was that if I ever need to, I could unravel my lanyard and have a long length of cord to work with. Going back over my post, i certainly seems as if I was saying that I was left with this length of unused cordage. What really happened was I just guessed at the amount of cord needed and when I ran short, I just fused two tag ends together and continued on.

As I suggested, I am just messing around here and cannot imagine trying to sell anything I make. But who knows? Maybe some of my buddies will want a new lanyard... I did recently find a youtube vid of a guy who knits (needles and all) slings out of pcord, but the resulting product seems to be a bit too loose and stretchy to be used to stabilize for a shot. Nifty concept, however.
