NDR, family canoe trip...

Tod those are some great memories you guys are making. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see these photos of a family going on a simple camping trip.

Hey Tod,

Nice to see you made it into my back yard, you had a beautiful weekend and just missed the deer fly hatch . Had you canoed down the Saranac chain you would have come through my place of employ at Bartlett Carry.

Tod, Great picts , looks like a fun time, man Gus is really growing up.

Thansk Fred. Just the other day I was looking at pics from when you were in your neck of the woods with him as a diaper wearing toddler.

That is a neat area you live in, really neat. One of those places that always gets Jen and I talking about moving. Wonder if Paul Smith's is hiring???? kinda thing. We were nearly alone on that lake for several nights - amazing.

We were talking and decided that we should get up there at least once a year, since it is such a great area. Next time we are up, we won't be rushing so much and maybe we can buy you a beer or two in exchange for a few stories. That would be great.

Don't worry, we did hit a nice patch of deer flies in the bog at the carry. They tormented the black dog something fierce, but they were not too bad for the rest of us.

I was thinking of you when we were there, although I didn't know what a tough time you were having at that point last week. Every time I catch a brookie I always think of you and rate how pretty it is in relation to what you could paint. I always think... is this one worthy of Tim?

That Splake was a cool fish that you would have appreciated. The colors are totally wrong in the picture from when he came in seconds before. He had the brookie coloration with a char's light spots on the chocolate, but they were spots not wavy lines like on a laker. The splake I've seen are usually clear water fish, not from humic stained water like this and are gray like a laker from similar water.

Brook trout & Wild flowers, some of the Almighty's best work. Plus fresh caught brookies are Delicious, especially cooked over hot coals - Outdoors. Now that's a Good Time and Time Well spent.

Yes, evolution by natural selection produces an amazing diversity of organisms.

Tod,

It looks like you had a great trip, thanks for the pics. That would be a good warmup for the Boundry Waters.

Yeah, we haven't been to BWCA since we left the midwest and it is such a neat place. I'm surprised at the solitude we found in the ADKs.

Nice one! Man those are some pretty fish.

Mike

Thanks Mike, I didn't eat any lakers, but the brookies and splake were almost as pretty on the inside as the outside :). Thier flesh was nearly Sockeye colored, surely rivaled any sliver or king. Pretty neat. I've had some pretty colored trout flesh, but these was so far off the flesh color scale from what I've seen it was amazing.

A few grayling would have really rounded out the trip :).

Enjoyed the pictures.

makes me want to return to the boundary waters.

your canine ballast must be a lot more disciplined than mine.
I had a nice swim in the creek after surprising some wood ducks one morning.

You picked a great week. Most hard core fishermen hit those ponds earlier then mid May so they are gone. The weeks after Memorial day are always quiet. You had perfect weather, that was the nicest it's been since last Sept.

Jen was watching the weather, that was one reason we decided to go then (she is great with the daily updates :). I want to give ice out a try one of these years.

Thanks, the ballast is usually very well behaved - they are within paddle range if not :).

tod,

Great pictures of a great outing. Thanks for sharing. Like others have mentioned, it puts a smile on my face to see your family enjoying the outdoors. Gus on top of the hut is a priceless photo.

Awesome pictures Tod! It looks like the family had a great time.

That's nice that Gus got into the paddling. I had a similar experience while trapping last spring. I started out towing Conall in the kayak, then he just started paddling around on his own.

What part of the Adirondacks were you in?

Again guys thanks for the feedback! I'm ready to go again, but I know the fishing will be slower and the bugs faster!

Area was north of Lake Placid, so a ways up there for us.
