NDR- Fish finders/depth

Hey guys, looking for your recommendations for a good, not top of the line fish finder. Essentially I will be using it for depth finder with some (read 3-6 times a year at the most) fishing, mainly for just knowing how deep of water I am in.

My previous ones really were bad at telling me the depth, especially when I was on plane. Shallow water accuracy is actually much more important to me than if I am in 70 or 75 feet, but 4 vs 2 is really important.

So, those of you who fish or have these toys, which models should I be looking at and which ones should I definitely stay away from. Please give me your reasons.

Thanks.

I have an older Humminbird on my fishing boat, it works fine. I use it for depth and bottom structure more than anything else, works fine. I think you can find one for 150-200 beans that will get the job done.

I run Eagle's on my fishing boat. They are Lowrance's low cost brand. They seem to work really well in shallow water at speed as long as you have a strong mount on your transom transducer. They tend to want to flip up when running. I run mine in shallow water all the time and have had good luck with them.

Lowrance is a good line. Sometimes being able to read the bottom well on plane has as much to do with where the transducer is mounted as the brand. I've seen people have problems and moved it a couple inches and it works fine. Turbulence from even a few rivets right in line can screw them up. I do know someone who has had problems with the mid to lower end Humminbirds reading the bottom in shallow water. I've always liked Humminbird so not sure what his problem is.

My nephew has a couple of the Lowrance units on his bass boat, one HDS and I think the other is an Elite. I've never seen them fail to show bottom even at 60mph. The HDS is top of the line price though. Pretty neat to have maps and depth all in one. Some of the Elite and the Mark lines are lower cost.
