NDR: Fishing in Boston in July???

Looks like I will be in Boston July 19-23 this summer. Wouldnt mind taking a day off to do some fishing.
Can anyone in that area reccomend a party boat to do some seabass/porgie or cod/haddock fishing for the day?
Not looking to spend a lot of $$, so a striper charter is probably out unless some one here want to donate some boat time to the transplanted Yankee.

If you are staying S of Boston the Francis Fleet out of Narragansett Rhode Island has the economical fishing deal you are looking for.

Haddock/Cod is a little tough this late in the Summer. These fish will be further out/in deeper water.

Staying at the Park Plaza right in Boston, so a trip down to RI would be tough to pull off.
I know about the Francis Fleet, I had planned to fish them a couple of years back but then my business trip got cancelled.
Still visit the website to drool over the cod, fluke & seabass reports!

i don't think you can avoid some travel for what you want. I'm 99.9% sure there are no party boats out of Boston proper. To the north there are some out of Cape Ann/Gloucester . To the south around Cape Cod.

I Googled Boston Harbor fishing charters and whole mess of charters popped up that are based out of the harbor, minutes from down town. I can't make recommendations but hopefully someone can. If you were flying in and out of Hartford I could help but not in Boston.

Good luck!

There is a train from Boston to Providence or S. Kingston, RI.

If you don't mind my lousy stories and other pontifications, I'll take you fishing. We have to take Morton though because he knows where all the fish are and I don't.

Blues are easy to find though, they present themselves frequently.

Stripers will be scarce by then but blues will be in.
I like Newburyport (mouth of the Merrimack River). About 45min North of Boston.
Plenty of party boats to choose from or my cousin and I can take you out in his 17'.
Good to go if you are.

Re: "...........Boston July 19-23 ........reccomend a party boat........."

No shortage of "charter" boats in and around Boston/Newburyport. Not so for party boats (where you can expect your cost to be less than 50 bucks or so). I tried Google up one around Cape Ann/Gloucester/Rockport but couldn't.

There are plenty of striped bass around in mid-July all across New England. But in a normal year the bluefish are starting to get so thick that they are hard to avoid.

There's an operation out of Lynn, the American Classic, that is a well regarded headboat. You could reach it from the Park Plaza by taxi.

If you have a rental car there are good outfits in Hampton, NH (about 70 minute drive), Al Gaurons and Eastmans, and one in Ogunquit, Maine (about a 95 minute drive) the Bunny Clark.

Also, for not much more money you can often get a shared six-pack charter. The Relentless in Green Harbor (50 minutes south) offers those.

Everything I've mentioned has a fair-to-good website.

At that time of year the good options include fluke off RI, bluefish off NH and mixed groundfish offshore.

Looks like you have received plenty of responses with offers to help. I live on Cape Cod, keep my fishing boat in Falmouth Harbor.

People are giving you good advice for that time of year regarding your options. I spend most of my time fishing for Blue Fin Tuna east of cape cod or Yellowfin, albacore, bigeye, marlin, wahoo, swordfish, and mahi mahi. If that type of thing interests you let me know, I am always looking for good crew.

FYI, I am not a charter boat, but do have my commercial fishing license and sell the majority of my catches, split money with crew. So your cost is nothing.

Ooh ooh ooh, pick me pick me! Man, I love blue water fishing. If you ever need another guy on the boat, I would drive down in a second. I can work a gaffe and I have a strong back!

Do you ever run into a guy by the name of John Billings down in Falmouth? He has a 23' Pacific Skiff. He is my wife's uncle.

Nate:

Keep in contact with me when fishing season starts. I will let you know when I am going out and in need of crew, which happens more than you think due to work and family obligations. John Billings sounds familiar but I do not know him.

I have a 45' Ocean that I keep at MacDougalls in Falmouth Harbor. My direct e-mail is jobrien@vertexeng.com.

Thanks

Jim

Hey Jim,

That would be great. I am logging hours toward a captain's license so the offshore time would be welcomed. Did you get into any big eye tuna last summer?

Best,
Nate

Nate:

Definetly contact me starting in June. Great that you are getting your captains license. I have PLENTY of hours but never took the classes, test etc.

Yes I caught several big eye tuna over the past two seasons. Typically catch Yellow Fin, Albacore, Wahoo, Big Eye etc on every trip. Marlin not as frequently. The only fish that I have not caught is a swordfish, which I had one on the line last year but lost it (catch them at night on the drift in the canyons).

Fishing the canyons is an awesome experience, but not one for everyone. Driftiing on the water at night can be intimidating and exhausting, particularly if the wind kicks up.

I tried to post some pictures but they are all too large and I cannot reduce them.

I didn't know about it, but the advice about the party boat out of Lynn is solid.

If I were in your situation I would wait until about 3 weeks before departure, and then send a bunch of emails to Boston Harbor based small boat charters about sharing a half day for bluefish/striped bass.

Mid July can be a good time. Something out of Charlestown would be close to your hotel.
