I'd have them reimburse you for any materials and time etc, and then have each of them write you a letter as to why they want you to impose your justice, rather than the system. Then I'd think long and hard about it some more and tell them you will decide in a week or so... so they can really sweat it out.

Then do what you feel is proper.

if you think they may really be good kids, make them work off your money.. i'm sure their parents would be on board.

I understand your outrage and sense of violation. I also applaud your sense of mercy. A lot of us did stupid things when we were young. A felony conviction will follow them forever. I see plenty of opportunities for some public service in the hot sun for these boys this summer. Plenty of litter on the roadsides and at boatramps that needs to be cleaned up for starters. They also need to apologize in person and reimburse you for your financial losses.
