NDR - Kennel Build (Pic Heavy)

Back a few months ago whille out training Lincoln for the hunt test we just ran. My son, Tyler on the ride home one evening mentioned that he'd like his own dog. That way he wouldn't always be the birdboy. LOL - So, I thought about it and we made a deal. If he would read 2 training books, I'd get him a pup. Well, being the reader he is... he knocked those out quickly.

To buy myself time... I mentioned that the new pup would need a kennel because Lincoln was the only dog that would be a house dog. I took him out back and showed him where it would go and that between the material laying around our house and my dads we could build one and it not cost us a cent... Well, as with anything when your 13 - everything has to happen "Now" - So the build began on a wet, cold and muddy day.

With baseball running hot and heavy now. Tyler and his buddy have been working on it over the last 4 weekends and this weekend they got the roof on and its now it ready for the kennel panels. I have only had to help alittle, here and there... I'm Pretty proud of him!

And what he don't know - Is I have had his pup picked out for a little while now and she will be ready for pickup on the 19th - His birthday is the 21st! The hard part for me is keeping it from him - I am excited and can't wait to smell that pups breath! And I know he will do his best to do this little critter justice! I am looking forward to spending time with him and being his birdboy! I can't wait!

Hey, Victor, I really enjoyed this thread of yours. Well done! It won't be long until Tyler will be totally involved with his very own dog. I'll look forward to knowing what he names her. I was impressed with the ambition that Tyler and Nick have. Darn good sign in life. It will be one of those moments that he will never forget and who knows maybe even the hammering of nails will bring a smile to his face 10 years from now.

Victor, nice job, and great work experience for later in life. Its projects like this that give our kids a chance to decide if this is what they want to do for the rest of their life of something else. It also builds work ethic and character into them. Just one question, is PT wood ok for dogs to be on for a prolonged period of time? I wanted a zero maintainance house 12 years ago I wanted my builder to do the whole outside with PT and he declined, said it might poision my wife and myself. we ended up with Hardy Plank painted over, it now needs a paint job, the PT would be a nice weathered silver by now! Thanks Rich, I agree and believe this project hasn't derailed his plans to be a Neurologist. He has mentioned a few times that he really doesn't like to build things... LOL I think it is that awkward feeling of being a lefty and using the tools... but who knows... either way its skills he will reuse one day.

I know of a few retriever folks that have this setup using PT wood and they are nice setups and they have been using them for over 15 years - never had any issues. Plus, I figure that if the company's making PT wood want you to use their product, which mostly is used to build decks/porches. And the products is always in contact with humans - even babies crawling all on and around them. Then surely it would be OK for a dog... at least I hope so! I know I did some searches and there is alot out there on the subject.. I didn't read anything that would have made me change my mind, though.

"Tyler and Nick's Custom Gazebos" That's great seeing the boys build something like that. What a super skill building project. Tell that kid to get his goggles on when he's using the saw though. Squinting through your eyelashes isn't considered safe practice anymore. : )

Victor-

That is a great looking build. The boys have done a fine job and I give kudos to the reusing "found" materials. I am hoping to build a small run like this for my two pups so they can be outside and kenneled if we are having a party or just need to use the yard etc and not have them immediately in the way.

What are your rough dimensions? How do you plan to do the fencing?

By the way, it sounds appropriate that his nickname is Hammer, being that his name Tyler means "house builder". (I have a Tyler as well.)

Thanks Mike... Sorry to say but I'm afraid he has learned that from me. Not a good practice at all and I will have to do better in the future!

Thanks Chad

The kennel is 10x8 - The chain link panels will be bolted in-between the 6x6's - they will have to be cut down to fit (they are 10' long). It would have been great if the kennel was 11x11 or at least a true 10x10 without the post eating up the corners. But you have to work with what ya got.. LOL - We also plan to be able to split the kennel so that there are 2 runs - when we do that (later) the dog houses will be on the outside making each run 4x8.

I will post pictures of the completed kennel once the panels are installed.

You know I never have given it a thought to look up what "Tyler" meant - So thanks that's pretty cool!
