Nice walleye Dave.

I miss spring on the Detroit River, one of the great walleye fishing holes in America.

Dang. Doesn't look like spring has sprung up in your neck of the the woods.

I hope to be holding one of those some day. I never targeted them in RI and Ct. They are around in a few lakes, but stocked, not natural populations. From what I head they are one of the tastiest fish. My grandson is going to college near lake Erie, so I may take a trip out that way to visit and fish with him. Of course he,s now back in R I due the covid 19 crisis--so maybe next year!
 
Nice fish!! I was prepping all winter for a trip to Rainy River , but now that trip is cancelled :(

Will have to way to fish walleye till may 1 weekend in my area UGH!

Carl,
The local waters where I do most of my fishing are open season all year. Some waters within the state do have a season. I usually release all the large females and keep a few males for the table. I can catch them pretty regular which means I can be selective about harvest. Plus I enjoy eating other species as well.
 
Growing up in PA, walley closed around ice-out, for the spawn, and then came back in early May.
We never caught a lot of them from the lake I grew up on, but enough to make us keep trying.
My biggest was around 21", caught on a tip-up right before ice out.
 
That's a nice walleye Dave. They're a great fish. I target them primarily through the ice, like Carl the largest ones I've caught are on tipups.

I'm fortunate to live very close to good walleye fishing. I can usually catch a walleye about 60% of the trips I target them on my local rivers. These photos were taken In June and August of last year. Both locations are within 3 miles of my home.

Those are all impressive eyes Dave. I like the idea of fishing for them in the river, I've never tried it. I don't fish for them often in summer, we generally toss mister twisters or troll worms in a lake. There are some big ones in CT, Chris Finch has some pictures of hogs from when he worked on the electroshocking boats. I've seen them to 12 lbs but haven't caught one that large myself.
 
Dave, those are nice walleyes. When I lived in SD I did very well in the spring catching them in, of all places, the Big Sioux River up above Brookings. It is a turbid, slow prairie river that was about 30 yards wide where I would slowly wade and pitch a jig with a minnow. I never saw anyone else fishing that way.

Beautiful fish Dave. Wish I had a spot like you. Got a great spot for monster bluegills but no walleye.
